Michelle Weaver, an overachieving hotel clerk gets promoted to manager. The same day, she is startled by a giant orb that appears in the sky, causing everyone but Michelle to stand still and enter a seemingly catatonic state. Running home, she encounters a police officer who advises her to "wake up."
At home, her husband inexplicably begins speaking in an unfamiliar accent before he too walks outside and enters into the same state. Two young men with skateboards enter her house and introduce themselves as "customer service". They explain that she is in a virtual reality called SleepAway that people enter when sleeping and that she is actually a man named S. Phineas Howell who had a heart attack while using SleepAway and is in a coma explaining why she has no memory of her real life as Phineas. They introduce her to Ellen, a woman who claims to be Phineas' wife, and asks Michelle to wake up with her. Michelle agrees, but runs away when Ellen wakes up.
Hiding on the roof of her hotel from the customer service people, she encounters a man named Tom who explains that Phineas has passed away and warns her that waking up will cause her to die. Despite having reservations about living in a virtual world, she agrees to remain awake as part of a deal to become an NPC. Sometime later, Michelle is enjoying her life as a manager of the hotel. Ellen shows up asking to have a room for a week which pleases Michelle.
