Zeek is teaching Drew how to change the oil in his 60-year-old tractor when Sarah rushes out to grab Drew to make sure he gets to school on time. Before jetting off, Sarah takes a second to thank her father for spending quality time with her son. Over at Adam and Kristina's, Haddie rushes out the door to school, telling her parents she'll be home at 10 p.m. When Kristina asks why, Haddie says she'll be over at a friend's house, studying. Kristina tells Adam that she has a hunch Haddie's lying. When Max catches wind that Haddie might be lying, he tells his parents Haddie must face a consequence, otherwise she'll continue to lie.

Julia, Joel and Sydney are eating breakfast when a bird flies into their kitchen window, smacking directly into the glass. They go out to the porch to see if the bird survived. Julia tells Sydney to grab a shoebox and Joel picks up the bird and brings it inside. Later that night, Haddie attends Alex's AA meeting, where he receives his 6-month sober chip. During his speech, Alex thanks Haddie for her support and understanding. The next morning, Crosby and Jabbar are sitting at the breakfast table eating cereal when Jasmine asks Jabbar to clean his room. Crosby doesn't understand why they need to discipline Jabbar about cleaning his room.

Sarah shows up at Julia's office with coffee, lunch and cupcakes in her hand. Surprised, Julia asks why she's there. Sarah wants to celebrate her New Year's resolution. She's decided not to date anyone, ever. Instead, she's going to do things for herself and have a girls' night out with her sister. At school, Drew meets up with some guys on the baseball team. When he tells them about sharing a beer with his grandfather over the holiday, the guys invite themselves over to drink a beer after school. Meanwhile, Joel checks on the bird, which Sydney has named Amelia. Joel doesn't have the heart to tell Sydney the bird died, so he lies to her and tells her that she's sleeping.

Drew has his friends over after school. They head into Zeek's garage and open a beer. When Zeek walks in and find them sipping his beer, he lets them know the bar is closed. Zeek has a heart-to-heart with Drew. Drew's such a good kid, he doesn't need to impress anyone by drinking to look cool. Over at the community center, Haddie is helping Alex sort through donation boxes when Adam shows up. Adam claims he wanted to see where Haddie was spending so much of her time, but he doesn't fool Haddie; she knows he stopped by to meet Alex. As they're leaving, Adam invites Alex to dinner on Wednesday. Haddie's mortified, but Alex is delighted.

Kristina asks Haddie what she should make for their dinner with Alex. Max is curious about their dinner guest, but no one will fill him in. Meanwhile, Joel and Julia discuss how to tell Sydney about Amelia's death. Julia suggests telling Sydney about heaven. Joel disagrees. He doesn't want to bring religion and faith into the conversation. There's a clear difference of opinion and beliefs between Julia and Joel.

Crosby pops into Jabbar's messy room to find him playing. Crosby asks Jabbar to clean up his room since Jasmine will be home soon. Crosby promises to help him this once, as a secret, but then Jabbar's responsible for doing it on his own after that. Sarah mentions to Drew that she heard he had a few friends over. Assuming Zeek told on him, Drew confesses to having a beer with his grandfather on Thanksgiving and drinking with the guys, promising not to do it again. Sarah immediately seeks out Zeek. Giving Adam and Crosby a beer when they were Drew's age might have been okay, but it's not okay for Drew. Seth, Drew and Amber's dad, is an alcoholic and drug addict. Sarah explains that she worries every day that her kids will have the same addiction issues as their dad.

Alex shows up at Adam and Kristina's for dinner and is immediately faced with Max's honesty. Over dinner, Alex opens up to Adam and Kristina about his past, including the fact that he's in AA. After dinner, Kristina and Adam talk about how impressed they were with Alex, but at the same time, they think he's too mature to date their 16-year-old daughter. They decide they have to tell Haddie she can't see him any longer, knowing full well she'll hate them.

Joel and Julia sit Sydney down after school to tell her that Amelia, the bird, died. Joel explains that death is what makes the world a beautiful place, because it's not permanent. When Sydney starts to get sad, Julia tells Sydney that after you die you go to heaven where everyone that you love is waiting for you. Listening to Julia tell Sydney that her grandma, Joel's mom, who died when she was just a baby, is waiting for them in heaven and with Amelia makes Joel tear up.

Sarah has a talk about drugs and alcohol with Amber and Drew. She tells them that their father had issues with alcohol and drugs, so they have to be extra careful because they may be prone to hereditary preconditions. Meanwhile, Jabbar rats out Crosby for cleaning his room. Jasmine confronts Crosby over his parenting of Jabbar, explaining it's Crosby's job to be a parent, not a friend.

Julia and Sarah enjoying a bottle of wine while getting ready for their girls' night out. Julia talks about her frustrations over not getting pregnant, while Sarah talks about Drew and the beer incidents. Zeek knocks on the door and joins them for a glass of wine. Adam and Kristina tell Haddie that it's best if she no longer sees Alex. Haddie tries to understand why they're forbidding her to see Alex and gets really upset. The next morning, Sarah and Julia are hung over from their girls' night out, which turned into girls' night in, since they never actually made it out of the house. Zeek takes Drew for a ride and a little grandfather-and-grandson bonding.

When Julia gets home from her girls' night in with Sarah, she finds Joel in the kitchen, watching Sydney play. Joel admits that he likes thinking about his mom in heaven with that bird. Over at Jasmine and Crosby's, Crosby tells Jabbar that if he doesn't clean up his room, he can't go to the zoo. Crosby takes a stand, remaining firm on his decision despite Jabbar's tantrum. At the community center, Haddie tells Alex that her parents thought that he was really impressive and they loved him.
