Notorious serial killer Gregory Williams Yates (guest star Dallas Roberts), serving a life sentence in prison, claims to have information that will lead to the discovery of several missing person cases in the Midwest. Reluctant to send Rollins (Kelli Giddish), Benson (Mariska Hargitay) asks Chicago P.D.'s Voight (Jason Beghe) to send Lindsay (Sophia Bush) to interview Yates instead. Unfortunately, Yates yields no information to Lindsay and demands an audience with Rollins.
Rollins, with Carisi (Peter Scanavino) in tow, has more luck with Yates, and he provides SVU with actionable information. For his cooperation, Yates is transferred to a different block in prison... and into a room with his former nemesis, Dr. Carl Rudnick (guest star Jefferson Mays). When Benson, Barba (Raul Esparza) and Dodds (Andy Karl) arrive at the prison to interview Yates, his ulterior motives are revealed - a prison break, which Rudnick had been planning for some time.
Lindsay and Dawson (Jon Seda), from Chicago P.D., join SVU in the manhunt to find Yates and Rudnick. With help from an accomplice and a nine-hour head start on authorities, the killers could be anywhere... and quickly leave a trail of bodies, murdering anyone who stands in their way.
Intel places Yates and Rudnick at a remote cabin in the woods. When Lindsay and Dawson investigate, more victims are discovered - including a N.Y. State Trooper. Later, Rudnick is discovered by himself, beaten, abandoned and left for dead by Yates.
Lindsay is ordered to return to Chicago, but she has other plans. After Lindsay and Dodds discover an abandoned car and another victim, they receive gunfire from an unseen assailant - presumably Yates. After Dodds is shot (not fatally), Lindsay decides to pursue Yates on foot. She sees Yates escape in a truck, and finds another one of his victims. Chillingly, Yates had placed a note in the victim's mouth, taunting Lindsay that he will see her in Chicago.
