Grimm Episode 4.07 The Grimm Who Stole Christmas

Christmas has come to Portland and the city's residents are celebrating. When a giant present shows up on Dennis and Emma's front step, they think nothing of having their party guests bring it inside. Later that night, three hairy creatures break out of the box and begin destroying the couple's Christmas decorations. When Dennis heads downstairs to find the source of the noise, he is attacked and dragged away. Guess Wesen don't take the holidays off.

Nick, Hank and Trubel are digging deeper into the Secundum Naturae Ordinem Wesen at the trailer when they learn about the break-in at Dennis and Emma's house. While rifling through Grimm books, Hank finds an entry on the society, also known as the Wesenrein, that explains the organization dates back to the Inquisition and its purpose is to rid society of impure Wesen. The group, which is depicted wearing masks, executes impure Wesen by burning and staking them.

At the crime scene, Nick and Hank interview Emma, who names the surprise delivery as the only unusual thing about the night. Upon further inspection, Hank realizes the box was broken from the inside and Nick spies a piece of fruitcake among the debris on the floor. These criminals are odd indeed.

Trubel attempts to sneak out of the house the next morning but she is caught by Josh, who wants to join her so he can learn more about the Wesen world he's been thrown into. Trubel eventually relents and it's a good thing, too, because while spying on Shaw at his house, she is surprised by a Schakal. Luckily, Josh knocks the Wesen unconscious before it can hurt Trubel.

Returning home, Trubel and Josh present Nick with the mask she found on the Schakal. She also comes clean about what Bud really needed when he claimed his son was being bullied. Nick is clearly irritated but he can't argue with Trubel's success, so he asks her to question Bud and find out more about Shaw's friends. Nick, meanwhile, heads to the hospital to speak to Dennis, who believes he was attacked by kids wearing masks. He describes them as having green eyes, yellow teeth, pointed ears and a particularly pungent smell.

With Bud now in tow, Trubel and Josh return to Shaw's house. Parked across the street, Bud uses binoculars to identify the friends gathered. He knows just about everyone - except the man wearing a mask and black robe who looks out of a window, then closes the curtains so no can see in.

Nick and Hank get a break in the case when a 911 call comes in reporting a break-in in progress. When they arrive at the house, they're surprised to see exactly what Dennis described - a trio of hairy beasts. One throws a plastic decoration at them from the roof but loses its footing and falls. When Nick approaches the creature, it jumps onto his back and tries to strangle him but Hank quickly knocks him out. Unsure if the beast is actually Wesen or not, Nick and Hank bring it to Monroe and Rosalee's house so they can investigate further. Once there, Juliette injects the furry guy with a sedative and Nick and Hank place him inside a dog crate so he can't run off. Rosalee and Juliette offer to monitor the creature while the boys head to the trailer to find some answers.

What they learn is that the beasts are called Kallikantzaroi and they are the children of the Wesen known as Indole Gentile. A rare disorder forces the children to transform into Kallikantzaroi during puberty and wreak havoc for the 12 days of Christmas. Interestingly, the Kallikantzaroi are insatiably drawn to sweets and when they overindulge in fruitcake, they can be rendered harmless. "Wow, so there's actually a reason for fruitcake," says Monroe, echoing what we're all thinking.

Back at Monroe and Rosalee's house, Juliette is getting the full experience of Monroe's Christmas spectacle - and experiencing something unexpected. When she grabs her stomach and complains of nausea, Rosalee asks if Juliette could be pregnant. Juliette says no before remembering her experience as Adalind. But before she can fully contemplate the possibility, a crash rings out from the garage. Rosalee and Juliette run to check on the Kallikantzaroi and find it freed from the crate and joined by its friends. Despite Rosalee and Juliette's best efforts to take down the trio with frying pans and nearby tchotchkes, the Kallikantzaroi are dangerously close to destroying Monroe's prized train set. Fortunately, Monroe returns at that moment and woges, frightening the Kallikantzaroi off.

When Nick and Juliette arrive home, they find Trubel, Bud and Josh chowing down and pouring over a list of Shaw's friends. Josh, now fully on board with the existence of Wesen, asks Nick the next morning if he can stick around for a bit longer and learn as much as he can before returning home. Nick obliges and suggests none other than Trubel be his guide. Looks like the student really has become the teacher.

Just then, Monroe calls Nick and informs him of a medical alert bracelet he and Rosalee found in their living room. Nick and Hank trace the bracelet to a Greek family and pay them a visit. After confirming the parents are Indole Gentile, Nick and and Hank explain what is happening to their son, John, and ask where they can find him. His parents reveal John will be performing with a youth choir at the family's local church that evening.

As part of Josh's curriculum, Trubel brings him to the trailer and they both brush up on their knowledge of Hundjagers, the Wesen that attacked Josh in Philadelphia. He asks Trubel what she thinks his chances are of surviving if he were to return home. She says she can't be sure but that it's important he not spend his entire life running.

To catch the Kallikantzaroi, Nick and Hank seize a food truck specializing in selling fruitcake and have Monroe and Rosalee park it in front of the church, leaving a fruitcake trail from the church's entrance into the back of the truck. Inside, Nick and Hank witness three children transform into Kallikantzaroi in view of everyone in attendance. When they get a whiff of the fruitcake, the trio runs out of the church and straight into the truck, as everyone had hoped. Monroe and Rosalee, who had been waiting in the bushes, jump out and lock the Kallikantzaroi in.

The next morning, Nick, Hank, Monroe, Rosalee and the parents of the three Kallikantzaroi gather to see if the fruitcake did the trick. Thankfully, it did and the kids are all restored to their regular selves. But someone else has endured a transformation alongside the Kallikantzaroi: Trubel. When Nick arrives home, an emotional Trubel greets him on the front steps. She explains that Josh wants to go home and she doesn't believe he should do it by himself. Nick is sad to see her go but gives her one last Grimm-to-Grimm gift to aid her journey: Aunt Marie's car. When Trubel and Josh drive off, Nick heads inside to break the news to Juliette, who we see has been watching all along from her bedroom window. Why is Juliette awake at this early hour? To learn for sure if a baby Grimm could be growing inside her.
