AceShowbiz - The first trailer for Whalefall, directed by Brian Duffield and based on Daniel Klaus’s 2023 novel, was unveiled at CinemaCon by 20th Century Studios, offering audiences a glimpse into the film’s intense underwater setting.
Leading the cast is Austin Abrams, who plays a scuba diver swallowed alive by a massive sperm whale. The story centers on his desperate struggle for survival inside the whale’s belly while also reflecting on his complex relationship with his deceased father.
The trailer opens with Abrams’s character on a diving expedition, encountering a squid amid ominous music that hints at the looming danger. Soon after, a colossal whale appears, trapping him against rocky terrain with no escape. Even as he attempts to swim away and hide among the kelp, the whale relentlessly circles in the dark waters.
In a tense and gripping sequence, the whale attacks, forcing Abrams to cling tightly to its teeth and furiously kick against its tongue. He is then swallowed whole, screaming as bubbles escape from his diving mask, and the screen cuts to black, amplifying the suspense.
Joining Abrams in Whalefall are notable actors Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue, and John Ortiz. The film is produced by Imagine Entertainment, with Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, and Allan Mandelbaum serving as producers. Klaus co-wrote the screenplay alongside Duffield, ensuring the adaptation stays true to the novel’s thrilling narrative.
Whalefall is set to premiere in theaters on October 16, promising a unique blend of psychological drama and survival thriller set beneath the ocean’s surface.
In addition to his role in Whalefall, Austin Abrams recently appeared in the series Euphoria and starred in Zach Cregger’s Weapons. Earlier in the same week at CinemaCon, Abrams was also featured prominently when Sony revealed the trailer for Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil movie, in which he also stars.
The release of the Whalefall trailer has generated significant buzz among moviegoers and industry insiders alike, intrigued by its innovative premise and the intense, claustrophobic atmosphere depicted in the footage. With a strong cast and a compelling source novel, the film aims to captivate audiences this fall.
