AceShowbiz - Klara and the Sun introduces audiences to a dystopian future through the eyes of an artificial intelligence named Klara, portrayed by Jenna Ortega. The film adapts the bestselling 2021 novel by Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro.
In this story, Ortega brings to life Klara, a robot companion designed to ease human loneliness. Klara is purchased by Chrissie, played by Amy Adams, for her daughter Josie, portrayed by Mia Tharia. The narrative centers on the unique friendship that develops between Klara and Josie as they navigate a society shadowed by dystopian challenges.
The film is directed by Taika Waititi, who also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Dahvi Waller. At the recent Sony Pictures Entertainment panel during CinemaCon, the first footage from Klara and the Sun was unveiled. Nicole Brown, president of TriStar Pictures, praised Ortega’s performance as “extraordinary,” setting high expectations for the film’s October 23 theatrical release.
The preview shows scenes of people frozen in time within a futuristic setting where robots await selection. Klara encounters Josie and is brought into their home, where she reacts with wonder to everyday objects, such as stairs. The footage hints at underlying tensions when Klara is cautioned against uncovering the household’s secrets and faces the threat of being returned to the store if she disobeys.
Despite these warnings, Klara expresses her desire to heal and protect Josie’s family from impending darkness and despair. The novel’s point of view is uniquely shaped by Klara’s observations and innocence, which the footage captures by emphasizing her wonder at simple things often overlooked by humans. The tension between Klara’s role as a servant and her growing emotional investment in the family creates dramatic stakes for the film.
Joining Ortega, Adams, and Tharia is an impressive supporting cast featuring Natasha Lyonne, Steve Buscemi, and Simon Baker. Notably, Ortega and Buscemi reunite after their collaboration on Netflix’s Wednesday season 2, where they portrayed characters associated with Nevermore Academy. Production on the third season of that popular series is currently underway.
Ortega is no stranger to genre work, having extensive experience in horror and supernatural projects including Wednesday, Beetlejuice 2, Scream and its sequels, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, and Death of a Unicorn. However, Klara and the Sun marks a significant entry into science fiction for her, beyond her voice role in the animated series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.
Klara and the Sun is set to arrive in theaters on October 23.
