AceShowbiz - For her milestone 10th studio album, Kany García embarked on a journey back to her origins by retreating to her mother’s countryside home in Morovis, Puerto Rico. This return to her roots inspired a deeply personal and introspective work that opens a heartfelt dialogue with her inner child.

Speaking with Billboard Español, Kany García shared how the creative process behind Puerta Abierta marked a significant challenge following her previous album, which bore her own last name. “After naming an album after your last name, it’s like, ‘Where do we go next?’” she reflected. Seeking to connect with her heritage, she aimed to incorporate instrumentation reminiscent of her cultural background without producing a strictly folkloric record.

Rather than her usual approach of writing songs first and then assembling an album concept, Kany García reversed the process. “I did everything backward,” she explained. This method allowed her to gain clarity and direction, conceptualizing the album as a conversation with her younger self. This innovative approach enriched the project with emotional depth and focus.

Puerta Abierta, released on April 9, 2024 through 502 Records, features 11 tracks that blend reflections on identity, resilience, tenderness, and self-discovery. The album’s sound is textured with native Puerto Rican and Caribbean rhythms and instruments, creating a rich sonic landscape.

The album includes previously released singles like “Tierra Mía” and “La Mala Era Yo,” the latter a norteño-inspired collaboration with Mexican singer Yuridia. Additional notable partnerships feature the legendary Dominican musician Juan Luis Guerra on the track “Amor Bonito,” Venezuelan group Rawayana on “La Culpa,” and Argentine artist Nathy Peluso on “Gatita.”

Visual storytelling also plays a crucial role in the album’s narrative. The concept of the “inner child” is woven into Kany García’s music videos, echoing the album’s themes. “It’s not just an ode to my childhood,” she remarked. “The inner child was the starting point for having conversations with her, telling her what I love today, what I’ve healed from what she experienced, and also embracing the things about her that I adored and had forgotten I adored... It’s quite autobiographical.”

Following the album release, Kany García will launch an extensive world tour beginning April 17 at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City. The tour will cover nearly 40 cities across Latin America and Europe throughout the year, with additional dates expected to be announced.

Musically, the song is a type of seis, a traditional Puerto Rican countryside genre with many variations such as seis chorreado, seis mapellé, seis andino, and seis fajardeño. This particular seis is blended with Cuban son influences, evoking the sound reminiscent of Buena Vista Social Club, known for its warm and nostalgic sonority.
