AceShowbiz - Prime Video is expanding its original content with a new crime thriller titled Calamities, set in Texas. The streaming platform has issued a straight-to-series order for this gripping drama, which marks a collaboration between David Weil, creator of the acclaimed series Hunters, and executive producer Glen Powell.
Calamities is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and brings Weil back to the Prime Video family, where he has previously contributed to projects such as Hunters, Citadel, and the 2021 limited series Solos. The upcoming series will also be produced by Weil and Natalie Laine Williams under their Please Enjoy banner, alongside Powell and Dan Cohen’s Barnstorm company.
The story of Calamities is described as a tense and character-driven thriller, unfolding in a small Texas border town. The plot ignites when a drug deal spirals into violence, setting off a deadly chain of events involving a small-town sheriff haunted by her past, a sociopathic hit woman, an eager FBI agent, and a dangerous cartel faction. This complex collision sets the stage for a riveting narrative exploring crime and personal vengeance.
David Weil serves as creator, writer, and showrunner for Calamities. The series promises a fresh take on the crime thriller genre, with Amazon MGM Studios’ Peter Friedlander praising Weil’s storytelling for its intensity and emotional impact. Friedlander expressed enthusiasm about supporting Weil, Williams, Powell, and Cohen in bringing the story to life exclusively on Prime Video.
Besides his producing role on Calamities, Glen Powell continues to expand his involvement in high-profile projects. He is also working on a Texas Chainsaw Massacre series with A24, executive producing the film How to Make a Killing, and serving as an executive producer for his Hulu series Chad Powers. Additionally, Powell is co-writing an upcoming comedy feature titled The Comeback King with Judd Apatow, set for release in 2027.
Representation for the creative teams includes CAA and Jackoway Austen for Weil and Please Enjoy, while Powell and Barnstorm are represented by CAA, Johnson Shapiro, and Initiative PR. This new series is set to contribute to Prime Video’s slate of original content, highlighting a dynamic mix of crime, suspense, and richly drawn characters.
