AceShowbiz - Pretty Lethal is an intense thriller that follows five ballerinas stranded in a remote forest who find refuge at a mysterious roadside inn. Forced to survive, they transform their years of disciplined ballet training into a deadly form of combat, using everything from their grace to their pointe shoes as weapons.
The film’s director, Vicky Jewson, emphasized the innovative stunt choreography that blends ballet with martial arts, coining the term "ballet-fu." To achieve this, the production developed a detailed glossary of fight moves rooted in ballet techniques. This approach was essential to bring authenticity and originality to the action scenes.
Jewson explained that each stunt double was paired with a ballet double, mostly recruited from the Royal Opera in London. This team of 15 dancers dedicated themselves fully to the project, ensuring that the choreography stayed true to ballet’s discipline while incorporating fight elements. "Everybody had their own person, and they stuck with them throughout the whole movie," she said.
The director’s goal was to create action that felt genuine and believable. She wanted the audience to truly believe the characters were in danger and that their combat style was a natural evolution of their ballet skills. This authenticity culminated in a standout bar fight scene, which showcased the unique "ballet-fu" concept.
The film was part of the Deadline Studio at SXSW presentation, where the unique blend of ballet and action choreography was a highlight of the discussion panel. The collaboration between stunt and ballet doubles, along with the commitment of the cast and crew, demonstrates a fresh take on action filmmaking by embracing authenticity and innovation.
