- March 31, 2026
AceShowbiz - The upcoming 50th edition of the Hong Kong International Film Festival is set to open with We Are All Strangers, a much-anticipated drama by Singaporean director Anthony Chen. The film will premiere as the festival’s opening-night gala at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, kicking off the event which runs from April 1 to April 12.
We Are All Strangers is the final chapter in Chen’s Singapore-set "Growing Up" trilogy and recently competed at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it attracted significant acclaim. The film stars Yeo Yann Yann and Koh Jia Ler and explores complex themes such as family, identity, and the idea of belonging beyond traditional blood relations.
Wrapping up the festival on April 12 will be Cyclone, a film by Hong Kong director Philip Yung. Cyclone made its debut earlier this year at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. It features performances by Liu Yuqiao, Edwynn Li, and Jenny Suen. The film delves into important social issues, focusing on transgender identity and experiences of marginalization.
These two headline films lead an extensive program of 215 films from 71 countries and territories, curated especially for the festival’s Golden Jubilee. The impressive lineup includes 11 world premieres, four international premieres, and 49 Asian premieres, showcasing a broad and diverse selection of cinema from across the globe.
Adding to the festival’s prestige, Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke has been named the Filmmaker in Focus. His participation includes a retrospective screening series and planned on-stage appearances, providing audiences an opportunity to engage deeply with his influential body of work.
The festival has also appointed two Asian Visionary Ambassadors to represent this milestone edition: Taiwanese actress Gingle Wang, who recently won best lead actress at the 22nd Taipei Film Festival, and Thai actor Metawin Opasiamkajorn, honored with the Asian Film Awards Academy’s 2024 Asian Rising Star Award. They join existing ambassadors Angela Yuen and Tony Wu in promoting the festival’s mission and outreach.
In addition to film screenings, the festival will feature several special events celebrating its 50-year history. Among these is In the Mood for Love - In Concert, a unique collaboration with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra that presents Wong Kar-wai’s iconic film accompanied by an innovative live musical score. This event is scheduled for three performances during the festival.
Moreover, a free exhibition titled 50 and Beyond: The Hong Kong International Film Festival Golden Jubilee Exhibition will be held at Hong Kong City Hall. This showcase will include archival materials, photographs, and reflections from filmmakers who have been part of the festival’s legacy over the past five decades.
The festival is also expected to welcome a number of prominent international filmmakers, including Juliette Binoche, Chen Kaige, Tian Zhuangzhuang, Huang Jianxin, Ann Hui, Tsai Ming-liang, Ildikó Enyedi, Pen-ek Ratanaruang, and the brothers Edwin Rivers and Ben Rivers. Their presence will further enrich the festival experience and highlight its importance as a major cinematic event in Asia.
With a robust lineup of films, distinguished guests, and special programming, the 50th Hong Kong International Film Festival promises to be a landmark celebration of Asian and global cinema, offering audiences a chance to witness exceptional storytelling and artistic achievements from across the continent and beyond.
