AceShowbiz - Tom Selleck is making his first return to television crime programming since the conclusion of Blue Bloods. Selleck portrayed New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan throughout the entire 14-season run of the CBS police procedural, which aired from 2010 to 2024. Following Blue Bloods ending with its series finale in December 2024, Selleck has not appeared on screen in any role until now.
His new project is a History Channel documentary series currently titled Crime and Justice with Tom Selleck. The show will span 10 episodes, where Selleck will explore the true stories behind some of the most impactful crimes and investigations in American history. The series ranges from historical cases set in the Old West to modern-day high-tech manhunts, offering a broad perspective on crime and justice through time.
According to Deadline, Tom Selleck is not only the host but also an executive producer of the series. He shares producing duties with David Carr, who is also the showrunner, along with Steve Ascher, Matt Pearl, Eli Lehrer, and Jim Pasquarella. The series is a production of A+E Factual Studios.
Tom Selleck’s upcoming series is part of a larger slate of documentary projects the History Channel is launching, all hosted by well-known celebrities. These include Kevin Bacon, Ted Danson, and Dolph Lundgren, each leading their own documentary series with unique themes:
Kevin Bacon hosts History's Strange Fortunes, a ten-episode series about fascinating true stories involving money — from lavish spending to incredible financial luck and infamous heists. Examples highlighted include a rock-and-roll star spending $50,000 on a late-night snack, a gold miner discovering a nugget worth nearly $1 million, and a circus hypnotist turned con artist through an epic heist.
Ted Danson presents Extraordinary Origins, which delves into the stories behind some of history’s major innovations, inventions, and discoveries that shaped the modern world.
Dolph Lundgren, known for his role in Rocky IV and his background in chemical engineering, hosts History's Greatest Machines. This series investigates the design and functionality of machines that transformed the world.
Additionally, Robin Roberts, co-anchor of Good Morning America, serves as executive producer for 102 Minutes Inside the Towers, a two-hour documentary commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in 2001.
Last year, the History Channel’s documentary lineup featured other stars such as Kevin Costner, Bradley Cooper, Morgan Freeman, Michael Imperioli, and Dan Aykroyd, showing a continued trend of celebrity-led historical content.
The announcement of Tom Selleck’s History Channel docuseries coincides with ongoing speculation about his potential return to the Blue Bloods franchise via the spinoff series Boston Blue. As of now, Boston Blue has three episodes remaining in its first season and has already been renewed for a second season. This renewal could create opportunities for Selleck to reprise his role as Frank Reagan in the future.
Tom Selleck remains a towering figure in crime drama, and his shift from fictional police commissioner to hosting a true crime documentary series marks an exciting new chapter in his career. Fans of his work can look forward to seeing him bring his signature gravitas and insight to real-life crime stories on the History Channel.
