AceShowbiz - HBO is preparing for a new fantasy series to follow the highly successful The Last of Us, with fresh details emerging from the network’s leadership. The acclaimed post-apocalyptic drama, based on Naughty Dog’s celebrated video game franchise, debuted in 2023 and quickly became a standout hit for HBO. Its third season is currently in production, anticipated to be the show’s final chapter, set for release in 2027. Meanwhile, HBO is already looking ahead to its next major project, the much-anticipated adaptation of the Baldur’s Gate universe.
In a recent interview with Radio Times, Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO at HBO and Max Content, provided insights into the development timeline for the Baldur’s Gate series, which is being developed by Craig Mazin, the co-creator of The Last of Us. Bloys confirmed that Mazin’s focus remains firmly on wrapping up season 3 of The Last of Us before diverting attention to the new project. The executive explained, “I believe that's where Craig is thinking,” in reference to season 3 being the concluding season of The Last of Us. Bloys also noted that while the door is never fully closed on future seasons, the current plan is to end the show with its third installment.
Regarding the Baldur’s Gate adaptation, Bloys expressed strong enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing that any venture Mazin pursues gains HBO’s immediate interest. “Anything that Craig is interested in, I'm interested in,” Bloys stated. However, the transition to Baldur’s Gate won’t happen until Mazin completes his duties on The Last of Us season 3. Bloys elaborated: “Obviously, he's deep into season 3 of The Last of Us - but Baldur's Gate was something he brought to us. He's very passionate about it, and he's thinking about it, and we've talked about it, but he's going to focus on The Last of Us, and then come back to [Baldur's Gate] when he's got more time.”
Season 3 of The Last of Us is currently filming in Vancouver. The second season ended on a dramatic cliffhanger involving key characters Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, and Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever. Notably, Neil Druckmann, who co-showran the first two seasons alongside Mazin, has stepped away from the series to concentrate on Naughty Dog’s upcoming video game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. This marks a significant change in the creative leadership heading into the final season of the show.
The announcement of the Baldur’s Gate series came in early February and represents Mazin’s third major collaboration with HBO, following the critically acclaimed Chernobyl miniseries and The Last of Us. The new series is set within the expansive world of Dungeons & Dragons and is intended as a narrative continuation of the story introduced in Baldur’s Gate 3, the popular RPG developed by Larian Studios. Mazin will serve as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the project, which also involves a partnership with Hasbro, the company that holds the Dungeons & Dragons intellectual property.
At the time of the series announcement, Craig Mazin shared his excitement about the opportunity to bring the game’s world to television. He remarked on his dedication to the project, having invested nearly 1,000 hours playing Baldur’s Gate 3. Mazin praised the game's creative team, led by Swen Vincke, and expressed gratitude to Gabe Marano and Hasbro for entrusting him with the adaptation. His statement highlighted a deep respect for the source material and a commitment to faithfully translating the game’s rich characters and narrative to the screen.
While an exact release date for the Baldur’s Gate series has not been announced, industry expectations suggest that the show could premiere around 2029, assuming it successfully navigates the development and production phases. For now, HBO viewers remain focused on the upcoming conclusion of The Last of Us, which continues to be one of the network’s flagship series.
In summary, HBO is gearing up to transition from the beloved post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us to the magical realms of Baldur’s Gate. With Craig Mazin at the creative helm of both projects, fans can anticipate a carefully crafted fantasy series that builds on the success of its predecessor. However, the network’s top priority remains delivering a satisfying ending to The Last of Us before embarking on this new epic adventure.
