AceShowbiz - At a recent event in Munich, Disney+ revealed its upcoming slate of original German productions, highlighting a broad range of genres set to debut in one of Europe’s largest TV markets. The lineup showcases everything from reality competition to supernatural thrillers and historical dramas, reflecting the streamer’s diverse programming ambitions in Germany.
Among the most anticipated series is City of Blood, a supernatural thriller adapted from the German graphic novel Berlinoir by Reinhard Kleist and Tobias O. Meißner. This show explores an alternate Berlin ruled by immortal vampires, blending dark fantasy with urban intrigue. The cast features rising stars Lea Drinda and Soma Pysall alongside established German actors Lars Eidinger and Jördis Triebel. City of Blood is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on September 16.
Adding a contrasting reality element to the slate, Disney+ will launch Yacht Deals Monaco in August. This reality soap centers on aspiring yacht brokers competing to secure a position with a top yacht broker on the French Riviera’s Côte d’Azur, offering viewers a glimpse into the luxury yachting world and high-stakes salesmanship.
Later in the year, November will see the debut of Vienna Game, an Austrian period drama promising a rich and opulent historical narrative. This addition further emphasizes Disney+’s commitment to producing high-quality European period content alongside more contemporary and genre-driven series.
Disney+ also announced two new projects aimed at younger audiences and crime drama fans. The young adult series Westwell, adapted from books by German author Lena Kiefer, is set in New York and will be produced in partnership with Warner Bros ITVP Germany. Meanwhile, the crime miniseries Monster (working title), based on Nele Neuhaus’ novel of the same name, is currently in production with ZDF and W&B Television, with a planned release in 2027. Notably, all these shows will carry the Hulu Originals label on Disney+.
This diverse slate aligns with Disney+’s previous German originals strategy, which has included a variety of genres. Past commissioned productions range from the miniseries Sam - A Saxon, telling the story of East Germany’s first Black police officer, to Call My Agent Berlin, a localized take on the popular French industry satire. The streamer has also produced supernatural dramas like Pauline, about a teenager impregnated by the literal son of Satan, and historical dramas such as The Interpreter of Silence, depicting the first Auschwitz trial held in Frankfurt in 1963.
Overall, Disney+ is positioning itself as a major player in the German TV market by investing in a broad spectrum of stories, ranging from gritty crime and period dramas to fantasy and reality competition shows. This strategy reflects the platform’s goal of appealing to diverse audiences while showcasing local talent and narratives.
