The story centers on Samuel (played by Ethan Hawke), who, after being separated from his daughter and imprisoned, receives a risky offer from Warden Clancy (portrayed by Russell Crowe). Clancy proposes that Samuel smuggle gold out of a remote mining area alongside a group of dangerous prisoners to earn his freedom. However, the treacherous journey through unforgiving wilderness reveals that the greatest danger lies within the group itself, where betrayal and violence simmer amid greed and distrust. Samuel must navigate these perils to reunite with his child.
