AceShowbiz - The beloved mystery series Murder, She Wrote is returning to the big screen with a new film set for release on December 22, 2027. Universal Pictures officially announced the upcoming feature, which will star Jamie Lee Curtis as the iconic amateur detective and mystery writer Jessica Fletcher, a role originally made famous by Angela Lansbury in the long-running CBS television series.
Directed by Jason Moore, known for his work on Pitch Perfect, the film will be based on a script by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo. The movie adapts the original series created by Peter S. Fischer, Richard Levinson, and William Link, promising to bring fresh life to the Emmy-winning crime franchise.
The production is being overseen by Amy Pascal, alongside producers Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood from Lord Miller. This film comes under Lord Miller’s first-look deal with Universal, following the company's recent success with the box office hit Project Hail Mary.
Interestingly, the same release date will also see the debut of Sony’s animated film Buds, marking a competitive holiday season for moviegoers.
Murder, She Wrote originally premiered in September 1984 and captivated audiences for 12 seasons. Lansbury’s portrayal of the Maine resident who solves murders earned her 12 Emmy nominations, solidifying the show’s place as a staple in the mystery genre.
In 2013, NBC attempted to reboot the series with a put pilot commitment featuring Octavia Spencer as Jessica Fletcher. However, the project stalled, partly due to Lansbury’s own disapproval of a new version, and it never progressed to a full series. Lansbury passed away in 2022, making this new film a significant tribute to her legacy.
Last summer, during the premiere of her film Freaky Friday, Jamie Lee Curtis shared her enthusiasm about taking on the role of Jessica Fletcher with Entertainment Tonight. She expressed excitement while also tempering her anticipation until filming officially begins.
"It's happening," Curtis said, highlighting her eagerness but cautioning that she is "tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting."
With a talented cast and crew behind it, the Murder, She Wrote movie aims to rekindle the charm and intrigue that made the original series a beloved classic. Fans can look forward to revisiting the world of Jessica Fletcher in theaters during the 2027 holiday season.
