AceShowbiz - Bloodsport is set for a modern reboot helmed by acclaimed talent Michaela Coel, with the project backed by A24. The original 1988 martial arts film starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, famously known as the Muscles from Brussels, portraying Frank Dux, a U.S. Army captain and skilled ninjutsu fighter competing in the underground Kumite tournament in Hong Kong. Now, nearly three decades later, A24 is financing and distributing a fresh take on this cult classic, with Coel taking on both writing and directing duties, according to Variety.
Details about Coel’s reimagining of Bloodsport remain tightly under wraps, leaving fans wondering how closely the new version will follow the original storyline. In statements shared by Coel and producer Marc Toberoff, both expressed enthusiasm for the project. Michaela Coel remarked, "I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them. I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET'S F***ING GO." Meanwhile, Toberoff highlighted the film’s impact, saying, "In 1988, the now-iconic Bloodsport introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts. I look forward to bringing back that high-energy tournament format to the big screen again."
Michaela Coel is widely recognized for her work on the HBO miniseries I May Destroy You (2020), which she wrote, directed, and starred in. She also gained attention for the British sitcom Chewing Gum (2015-2017), appeared in two episodes of Black Mirror, and portrayed Aneka, a Dora Milaje warrior, in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This new project marks Coel’s third collaboration with A24, following her starring role in David Lowery’s psychological thriller Mother Mary, set for theatrical release on April 24, and her work on the BBC miniseries First Day on Earth, which she wrote, co-directed, and stars in, currently in production.
The original Bloodsport was directed by Newt Arnold with a screenplay by Christopher Cosby, Mel Friedman, and Sheldon Lettich. The cast included Jean-Claude Van Damme as Frank Dux, along with Leah Ayres, Donald Gibb, Roy Chiao, Norman Burton, Forest Whitaker, and Bolo Yeung. The film centers on a brutal, no-holds-barred martial arts tournament held in Hong Kong, known as the Kumite, where fighters from around the world compete in full-contact bouts.
Upon release, Bloodsport became a significant box office success, grossing $50 million against its modest $1.5-2.3 million budget. It was one of the first leading roles that helped establish Van Damme as a mainstream action star. The film is often credited with sparking renewed interest in martial arts movies in the United States and influencing the rise of mixed martial arts as a sport.
Critically, the film received mixed reviews, holding a 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers praised Van Damme’s physical abilities but criticized the movie for its formulaic plot and recycled action tropes. Despite this, Bloodsport achieved cult status over time and spawned four sequels, although Van Damme did not appear in the follow-ups.
Today, Bloodsport is regarded as one of the best American martial arts films ever made, maintaining a strong fan base and cultural relevance decades after its initial release. The original movie is currently available for free streaming on platforms such as Fawesome, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, and Tubi.
The upcoming reboot by A24, with Michaela Coel’s creative direction, promises to bring a fresh perspective to this iconic action property. Fans of the original and newcomers alike will be eager to see how this new iteration reinterprets the intense world of underground martial arts fighting.
