AceShowbiz - Disney continues to expand its popular young adult franchises, with the Zombies series set to return for a fifth installment. The original Zombies film premiered in 2018 as a musical-comedy-adventure that centered on zombies striving for acceptance in a town that initially rejected them. True to Disney’s signature style, the story blended teenage drama, catchy songs, and impressive dance sequences. The franchise has often been likened to High School Musical, but with a unique twist featuring singing and dancing zombies.
Production on the fifth Zombies movie is scheduled to begin this year, although it has yet to receive an official title. This sequel will follow the events of Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires. Disney revealed the new plot, explaining that “the newfound peace between the Daywalkers and Vampires is put to the test when a band of fierce mermaids arrives in Rayburn, making waves and casting a persuasive siren song to lure in new allies.”
One of the most notable changes for this upcoming film is the absence of the franchise’s original stars, Milo Manheim and Meg Donnelly, who will not return to act in the movie. Instead, they will serve as executive producers, marking a shift in the series’ lead cast.
The first Zombies film focused on zombies seeking acceptance at a high school alongside humans. Subsequent movies expanded the universe by introducing new supernatural groups. The second installment brought werewolves into the mix, with the creatures initially feared by both zombies and humans. The third film added aliens, where the diverse group of zombies, werewolves, and humans banded together to defend their town before ultimately welcoming the extraterrestrials into their community.
With the fourth movie, the franchise took a new direction. The story moved away from Seabrook as the main characters embarked on a road trip, discovering a town embroiled in conflict between vampires and Daywalkers. Since zombies, werewolves, aliens, and humans had already found peace, the protagonists sought to unite these new groups. This film introduced breakout characters Daywalker Nova (played by Freya Skye) and Vampire Victor (played by Malachi Barton), whose romantic connection ended the movie on a hopeful note just as mysterious creatures emerged from the water.
The heart of the Zombies series remains its message of inclusion and acceptance, emphasizing that all beings—regardless of their nature—can coexist harmoniously. While the mermaids appear poised to challenge this peace in the new movie, it’s expected they will ultimately become allies, following the franchise’s pattern. Fans can also anticipate the continuation of the franchise’s signature, high-energy musical and dance performances.
Alongside the new leads, Nora and Victor, the fifth movie will see the return of several familiar faces, including Swayam Bhatia as Vera, Julian Lerner as Ray, and Mekonnen Knife as Vargas. New cast members portraying the mermaids include Diaana Babnicova as Pearl, Taylor Oliver as Fin, and Olive Mortimer as Sandy, the tech-savvy member of the group.
Director Paul Hoen, a DGA Award-winner who has helmed every film in the franchise so far, will return to direct the fifth installment, ensuring continuity in the series’ visual and musical style.
With production underway, fans of the Zombies franchise can look forward to another entertaining chapter that pushes themes of unity through music, dance, and a growing supernatural cast.
