AceShowbiz - The Yellowstone universe is expanding further with the upcoming series The Dutton Ranch, a spinoff centered on Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. A producer for the franchise has confirmed that this new installment will continue the tradition established by the original series and its predecessors, featuring plenty of action, intense drama, and numerous character deaths.
Although the original Yellowstone series concluded in 2024 after five seasons, the franchise remains very much alive. Following the success of spinoffs like 1883 and 1923, CBS recently premiered another series called Marshals, while The Dutton Ranch is currently filming in Texas. At the Marshals premiere, Yellowstone producer David Glasser spoke to Entertainment Tonight about what fans can expect from the new show.
Glasser revealed that The Dutton Ranch will maintain the franchise’s hallmark elements, such as a high body count and intense, “crazy” sequences. He said, "These shows always, for us, are a lot of dead bodies, a lot of people getting shot, a lot of crazy stuff happening. Just when you think we can't turn it up a notch, we do." This signals that the gritty and violent tone beloved by fans will persist in the upcoming series.
Beyond action, the producer emphasized the opportunity to dive deeper into the lives of Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. "We want to explore the characters’ lives on a deeper level and show how they mature and grow," Glasser explained. This suggests a more character-driven narrative alongside the franchise’s signature Western drama.
The Dutton Ranch already boasts a strong returning cast, including Kelly Reilly as Beth, Cole Hauser as Rip, and Finn Little as Carter. The show also features notable additions such as Annette Bening, Ed Harris, Jai Courtney, Natalie Alyn Lind, Marc Menchaca, Juan Pablo Raba, and J.R. Villarreal, with Chad Feehan serving as showrunner.
The Yellowstone franchise was created by Taylor Sheridan, who transitioned from writing and directing acclaimed films like Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River to television. Sheridan’s original Yellowstone series aired from 2018 to 2024 and became a cultural phenomenon, leading to multiple successful spinoffs.
Following 1883 and 1923, the franchise expanded with Marshals, which stars Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton. Other cast members from the original series, including Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty, and Gil Birmingham, also returned. Marshals focuses on Kayce’s new role in a U.S. Marshals unit. Despite high expectations, this series currently holds a critic score of 45% and an audience score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, which contrasts sharply with the much higher critical acclaim of the first two spinoffs, which averaged scores of 89% and 94% respectively.
Nevertheless, the franchise is progressing steadily, with The Dutton Ranch continuing to film and plans for a 2026 premiere on Paramount+. The show is expected to uphold the intense storytelling fans have come to expect, complete with significant character risks. Glasser hinted that no one will be safe, referencing the many character deaths that have punctuated the franchise so far, including Lee Dutton, Fred Myers, Samantha Long, Sarah Nguyen, Dirk Hurdstram, Wade Morrow, Emmett Walsh, Sarah Atwood, and John Dutton III.
The continuation of this tradition of death and drama underscores the franchise’s commitment to maintaining its gritty Western roots and high stakes storytelling. As fans await the premiere, anticipation builds for a series that will further explore the complex relationship between Beth and Rip, while delivering the intense, action-packed scenes that have defined the Yellowstone universe.
