AceShowbiz - Death Cab for Cutie has announced the release of their latest album, marking their first full-length project since 2022. The band’s new record, I Built You a Tower, is scheduled to arrive on June 5 via ANTI- Records.
Accompanying the album announcement, the band unveiled the first single, "Riptides", which was released on the same day. The track delves into the emotional difficulties of confronting personal struggles amid widespread tragedy and loss. Frontman Ben Gibbard described the song as an exploration of the paralysis that arises when such profound pain intertwines within our minds.
The official music video for "Riptides" features the band performing amid a vivid display of purple and blue lighting, casting their silhouettes in a striking and contemplative visual atmosphere. This aesthetic sets the tone for the overall mood of I Built You a Tower, which reflects a sense of introspection and emotional complexity.
Gibbard wrote the album while balancing the pressure of leading two bands simultaneously. Beginning in 2023, he fronted both Death Cab for Cutie and Postal Service during a joint nostalgia tour. At the same time, he was experiencing significant personal turmoil, described as being near a point of “collapse.”
In a statement, Gibbard emphasized the thematic core of the album: “There’s this need to find a place in ourselves to put loss and grief, a place that can hold it so we can move on with our lives. But there are these moments where the trauma breaks out of that shell we created for it.” This candid reflection highlights the album’s focus on navigating emotional pain and recovery.
Death Cab for Cutie last released an album four years ago with Asphalt Meadows, which reached No. 60 on the Billboard 200. The band has achieved ten entries on this chart overall, including their chart-topping album Narrow Stairs from 2008.
Following the release of I Built You a Tower, the band will embark on a tour beginning in May. The upcoming tour will cover venues across North America and Europe, featuring support acts such as Jay Som, Japanese Breakfast, Nation of Language, and Lala Lala.
