AceShowbiz - Hoppers secured the top spot at the domestic box office for the second consecutive week, earning $28.5 million domestically and $59.5 million worldwide this weekend. The animated comedy from Pixar successfully held off two new releases: the romantic drama Reminders of Him, which debuted at No. 2 with $18.2 million domestically, and A24’s horror film Undertone, which took third place with $9.3 million.
Pixar has bounced back as a box office powerhouse after a series of less successful films. Following the underwhelming performances of Soul and Elio, the studio delivered a hit with Hoppers, a family-friendly animated feature blending elements of The Parent Trap and Zootopia. It opened last weekend with an impressive $46 million domestically and $88 million internationally, signaling strong audience interest.
This past weekend, Hoppers added $28.5 million domestically, bringing its total U.S. gross to $86.8 million. On the global stage, it garnered an additional $59.5 million, raising its worldwide total to $164.7 million, according to Comscore. While these figures do not rival Pixar's blockbuster Zootopia 2, which earned its comparable sum in just two days, Hoppers still outperformed its closest competitors by a significant margin.
In second place, Reminders of Him arrived with a modest audience, earning $18.2 million domestically and $28.2 million worldwide. This romantic drama stars Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers and is based on a novel by renowned author Colleen Hoover, known for her popular and sometimes controversial books, including It Ends With Us. Despite a reported production budget of $25 million, the film faces a steep climb toward profitability once marketing and distribution costs are factored in.
At No. 3, Undertone, a paranormal horror film from indie powerhouse A24, earned $9.3 million domestically. The story follows two paranormal podcasters, played by Nina Kiri and Adam DiMarco, who uncover unsettling recordings. The film has not yet been released internationally, which limits its global earnings. However, with an estimated budget of only $500,000, the film is considered a financial success within its niche market.
Other notable box office results include the continued steady performance of the horror franchise Scream 7, which took in $8.3 million this weekend, pushing its domestic total to $106.5 million. The film initially shattered franchise records with its March opening weekend.
On the other hand, The Bride, a genre-bending reimagining of the Bride of Frankenstein starring newly crowned Oscar winner Jessie Buckley, struggled at the box office. The film debuted to a disappointing $7.2 million on an estimated budget of $80-90 million and added only $2.1 million in its second weekend, indicating a challenging road ahead for recouping costs.
Looking ahead to next weekend, the box office is set for a fresh showdown. Ryan Gosling stars in Project Hail Mary, a sci-fi adventure adapted from a novel by Andy Weir, author of The Martian. The film is expected to be a strong contender for the top spot, backed by a large promotional campaign and the popularity of the source material.
Competing alongside Project Hail Mary are the horror sequel Ready or Not 2 and the animated comedy The Pout-Pout Fish, both slated for release on the same Friday. However, industry watchers anticipate Project Hail Mary to have the upper hand in this competitive weekend.
As Hoppers continues its solid run, Pixar has once again demonstrated its ability to capture family audiences and maintain box office dominance, even amid stiff competition from new releases and other genres.
