AceShowbiz - Britney Spears was taken into custody last night following an incident on Interstate 101 in California, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

CHP officials reported that at approximately 8:48 PM on Wednesday, a black BMW 430i was observed driving erratically and at a high rate of speed heading southbound on the freeway. The vehicle was later found by officers near Westlake Boulevard in Thousand Oaks.

Upon stopping the vehicle, officers identified the driver as Britney Spears. The CHP stated that she exhibited signs of impairment and was asked to perform field sobriety tests. After the tests, Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence involving a combination of drugs and alcohol.

She was subsequently booked into Ventura County Main Jail. Chemical tests are still pending as the investigation continues.

According to Ventura County inmate records, Spears was released from custody around 6 AM the following day.

The 44-year-old singer has a history involving substance use. During a 2007 custody dispute with ex-husband Kevin Federline, a judge noted "habitual, frequent, and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol" by Spears. Since then, she has undergone multiple mental health treatments and rehab programs.

Spears is scheduled to appear in court on May 4 regarding this incident.
