Smiling Friends ends after Season 3. Creators Zach Hadel & Michael Cusack cite burnout, confirming the sincere announcement is not a prank.

AceShowbiz - The creators of Smiling Friends, Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack, have announced that the series will end following its third season, reversing an earlier renewal for two additional seasons.
The announcement was delivered through a voice message posted on YouTube on Wednesday evening, where the duo stressed that the update was sincere and not a joke or a prank. They expressed regret that the news might be disappointing for the show's fans.
Hadel and Cusack explained that the decision came after feeling significant burnout from dedicating many years to the project. Despite their exhaustion, they also conveyed a sense of accomplishment with what they have achieved creatively.
They shared, "We just came to this feeling where we're like, 'I think that could just be it after Season 3.' And, yeah, we both felt like it was right." The creators emphasized they did not want to continue producing more seasons if their enthusiasm was diminished, as it would be unfair both to themselves and to the audience.
The pair made it clear that ending the show was entirely their decision. They praised Adult Swim for their understanding and support, noting that the network responded positively when informed of their choice. According to them, Adult Swim encouraged them to take a break and decide whether to return in the future or not.
Although Hadel and Cusack have decided to conclude Smiling Friends after Season 3, they have not ruled out the possibility of creating more episodes later on, leaving the door open for future projects.
This update follows a previous announcement from June 2025 when Smiling Friends was renewed for Seasons 4 and 5. The series has quickly become one of Adult Swim's most successful shows on HBO Max, ranking within the platform's top 10 during the premiere of its second season, trailing only behind Rick and Morty.
The third season premiered in October and is set to air two additional episodes in April before its conclusion. The show centers around "the employees at a small firm dedicated to making its customers smile," who often find their work more complicated than it initially appears.
Fans will be able to enjoy the remaining episodes of Season 3, marking the final chapter of Smiling Friends as envisioned by its creators.
