AceShowbiz - Spider-Noir showrunner Oren Uziel has addressed questions about whether the upcoming Prime Video series ties into the version of Spider-Man Noir voiced by Nicolas Cage in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The new series centers on Ben Reilly, portrayed by Cage, a seasoned private investigator in 1930s New York who wrestles with his dark past while serving as the city’s sole superhero. This marks a live-action interpretation of the character, distinct from Cage’s previous voice role in the 2018 Oscar-winning animated film.
Despite speculation linking the two projects, Uziel clarified in an Empire interview that the series exists in a separate universe. “Same character, different universe,” he explained. He added that although Cage retains the character’s voice, this iteration offers a different take entirely.
Uziel emphasized the creative freedom the multiverse concept allows. “It’s not a continuation of Into the Spider-Verse. Once Phil Lord and Christopher Miller introduced the multiverse, you can take the character in new directions,” he said.
Both Uziel and Cage aimed to craft a version of Spider-Man unlike anything audiences have seen before. The showrunner recounted the rewarding experience of watching Cage perform his lines, describing it as “one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever experienced.”
It’s important to note that the Spider-Man Noir in Into the Spider-Verse was a Peter Parker variant, whereas the series’ protagonist is Ben Reilly. While the name differs, the essence of this noir-style wall-crawler remains intact.
Fans can also look forward to the inclusion of the villain Tombstone, portrayed by Abraham Popoola, as confirmed by promotional art and recent stills from the series.
The cast of Spider-Noir features Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage (Adaptation), Emmy winner Lamorne Morris (New Girl), Li Jun Li (Sinners), Karen Rodriguez (The Hunting Wives), Abraham Popoola (Atlas), SAG Award winner Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), and Emmy and Academy Award-nominated Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin).
The show also boasts an impressive roster of guest stars, including Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, Amanda Schull, Andrew Caldwell, Amy Aquino, Andrew Robinson, and Kai Caster.
Spider-Noir is produced by Sony Pictures Television exclusively for MGM+ and Prime Video. The first two episodes are directed and executive produced by Emmy Award-winning Harry Bradbeer, known for his work on Fleabag and Killing Eve.
Oren Uziel, known for The Lost City and 22 Jump Street, and Steve Lightfoot, recognized for Marvel’s The Punisher and Shantaram, serve as co-showrunners and executive producers on the series. The development team also includes the Oscar-winning creators of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse — Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal — who all executive produce alongside Aditya Sood and Dan Shear.
All episodes of Spider-Noir will premiere on Prime Video on May 27, offering viewers a fresh, noir-infused take on the Spider-Man mythos distinct from previous interpretations.
