AceShowbiz - After over four decades, the beloved 1980s sci-fi cult hit The Last Starfighter is officially set to continue its story—though not on the big screen. Instead of a traditional movie sequel, fans will experience the next chapter through a new comic book series scheduled for release later this year.
The Last Starfighter originally captivated audiences 41 years ago with its innovative use of digital special effects, which were groundbreaking at the time. Despite its initial modest box office performance, the film grew into a cult classic, cherished by sci-fi enthusiasts for its imaginative premise and memorable characters.
The comic sequel is being developed by one of the original film’s creators, Jonathan Betuel, who wrote the screenplay for the 1984 movie. Partnering with him is Paul Davidson, founder of 27th Hour and a longtime fan of the franchise. The writing team includes Deric A. Hughes and Benjamin Raab, known for their work on TV shows like The Flash, Warehouse 13, and Quantum Leap. Artistic duties will be handled by Willi Roberts with coloring by Francesco Segala. Mad Cave Studios, the publisher behind adaptations of titles such as Flash Gordon, Dick Tracy, and Speed Racer, will bring the comic to shelves.
Fans of the original film will recognize the central story of The Last Starfighter, which follows teenager Alex Rogan, portrayed by Lance Guest (Jaws: The Revenge). Alex is a prodigy at the arcade game Starfighter, holding the world record high score. His exceptional skill attracts the attention of Centauri, the game’s creator played by Robert Preston (The Music Man), who reveals that the game was actually a recruitment tool designed by aliens to find a pilot capable of defending their civilization against the threatening Ko-Dan Empire.
To conceal Alex’s disappearance from his family and girlfriend, played by Catherine Mary Stewart (Night of the Comet), the aliens dispatch a robot duplicate to Earth in his place, leading to a series of comedic events. Alongside the alien ally Grig, portrayed by Dan O'Herlihy (Halloween III: Season of the Witch), Alex embarks on an interstellar battle.
The film also featured early appearances from actors who later became well-known in the Star Trek franchise, including Wil Wheaton (The Next Generation) and Marc Alaimo (Deep Space Nine). Directed by Nick Castle, who famously played Michael Myers in the original Halloween and later directed several feature films, The Last Starfighter earned its place in sci-fi lore despite a lukewarm theatrical reception.
With the new comic book sequel, fans can anticipate the continuation of Alex Rogan’s adventure beyond the original movie’s conclusion. While details about the plot remain under wraps, the involvement of original creators and seasoned writers promises a faithful and exciting revival.
The comic will be published by Mad Cave Studios and is expected to be available sometime in 2026. This approach allows the franchise to explore new storylines and expand its universe without the constraints of a traditional film production.
For decades, The Last Starfighter has maintained a devoted fanbase, and this sequel in comic form offers a fresh way to engage with the story. Whether you experienced the original in theaters or discovered it later through home video, the continuation is sure to reignite interest in this pioneering sci-fi adventure.
