AceShowbiz - Treasure Island is set to return as a new television adaptation starring David Oyelowo, Hayley Atwell, and Jack Huston. The series is a joint production between MGM+ and Paramount+ UK, bringing fresh life to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale.
The show also features Tomer Capone and Tom Sweet, who join the main cast in this retelling of the beloved adventure. Oyelowo takes on the role of Long John Silver, while Atwell portrays Bess Hawkins, and Huston appears as Aaron Graham.
This adaptation follows the journey of teenager Jim Hawkins, played by Sweet, as he transitions from a sheltered youth into a daring young pirate. After discovering a fabled treasure map, Jim’s mother Bess uses her intelligence and quick thinking to protect him, though the knowledge they possess places both their lives at serious risk.
The series is described by MGM+ and Paramount+ UK as a “bold, high-stakes coming-of-age adventure series for a new generation.” It follows on the heels of other major literary adaptations, such as the recently produced Lord of the Flies, which was created for the BBC and Sony and sold to Netflix.
Produced by Playground, known for Wolf Hall, and with Fifth Season handling sales, the six-part series represents a rare co-production between two major American platforms. Notably, Paramount+ has secured rights only for the UK and Ireland regions.
MGM+ president Michael Wright commented that this new take on Stevenson’s classic perfectly reflects the MGM+ brand, combining timeless storytelling with a modern sensibility and an exceptional cast.
The series was commissioned by Sebastian Cardwell, Deputy Chief Content Officer, UK, and Paul Testar, Commissioning Editor for Paramount+ UK & Ireland. Production oversight for MGM+ is provided by Wright and Alec Strum, while executive producers include David Stern, Scott Huff, Colin Callender, Daniel Gratton, Robert Murphy, and Jeremy Lovering on behalf of Playground.
