Why was Melissa Barrera fired from Scream 7? Learn about the social media posts that led to her controversial exit from the horror franchise.

AceShowbiz - The firing of Melissa Barrera from Scream 7 became one of the most significant casting changes in the horror franchise's history. Barrera, who led 2022's Scream and 2023's Scream VI as Sam Carpenter, was widely expected to return for the next sequel. However, she was dropped from the project in November 2023, a move that preceded co-star Jenna Ortega's own exit.
Barrera was fired from Scream 7 following a series of social media posts she made concerning the Israel-Gaza conflict. In an Instagram Stories post from November 2023, Barrera wrote, "Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp." She also stated, "Western media only shows the [Israeli] side. Why do they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself."
Shortly after these posts circulated, production company Spyglass Media Group issued a statement confirming her removal. The statement read: "Spyglass' stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech." Barrera later responded that she condemns antisemitism and Islamophobia and that her comments were meant as advocacy for Palestinian civilians, but the studio did not reverse its decision.
From a narrative perspective, Barrera's departure leaves major storylines unresolved. Her character, Sam Carpenter, was the daughter of original Ghostface killer Billy Loomis, and her struggle with his violent legacy formed the emotional core of the new film era. Scream VI had positioned Sam and her sister Tara as the franchise's new central protagonists, relocating them to New York City and exploring their attempts to move forward.
With both actresses out, these character arcs will need to be abandoned or significantly reworked. The franchise's creative direction now appears to be shifting back toward legacy characters, notably Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott. In the real world, Barrera's firing prompted calls for a boycott of Scream 7 from some supporters, though early box office projections suggested the film was still tracking for a strong opening.
