AceShowbiz - The iconic emo band American Football has officially ended the wait, announcing their fourth studio album, LP4, for release on May 1, 2026. The announcement comes via their label, Polyvinyl Record Co., and marks the group's first full-length record since 2019's LP3.
Fans have been eagerly anticipating new material from American Football, whose influential, math-rock-infused sound defined a generation of emotional indie music. The band confirmed the news alongside the reveal of the album's stark, minimalist cover art and a full ten-song tracklist.
The tracklist for LP4 features intriguing song titles including 'Man Overboard', 'Bad Moons', 'Patron Saint of Pale', and 'Desdemona'. While a lead single has yet to be released, one is expected in the coming months ahead of the May launch.
This album announcement follows closely on the heels of American Football's recently revealed 2026 tour plans, which include extensive runs in North America and Europe. The UK leg will feature two major shows: at Leeds O2 Academy on June 26 and London's O2 Kentish Town Forum on June 27.
The band's album release cycle has historically been defined by long gaps, adding to the significance of LP4. Their self-titled debut (LP1) arrived in 1999, with the follow-up, LP2, landing a staggering 17 years later in 2016. LP3 followed in a relatively swift three years in 2019.
In the interim since LP3, American Football has remained active. They released the standalone single 'Rare Symmetry' in 2021 and a cover of Mazzy Star's 'Fade Into You'. The group also spent much of 2024 and 2025 celebrating the 25th anniversary of their seminal debut album with a global tour and a special reissue featuring covers by contemporary artists like Ethel Cain and Blondshell.
In a 2024 interview with NME, frontman Mike Kinsella reflected on the band's legacy and contemporary relevance, noting the admiration from younger stars like Hayley Williams and Matty Healy. "I don't know if we're like a nostalgia band," Kinsella mused. "In my mind we're not, 'cause I know how hard I'm working to write new stuff all the time and try new things."
With LP4, American Football aims to solidify its status not as a relic of the past, but as a continually evolving creative force. The album promises to deliver the intricate guitar work, shifting time signatures, and melancholic atmosphere that fans cherish, while potentially pushing their signature sound into new territories. Tickets for the accompanying 2026 world tour are expected to be in high demand as the emo pioneers prepare for their next chapter.
