AceShowbiz - Stephen King is a legendary figure in horror fiction, known for his iconic tales set in small towns with young, brave protagonists. Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things often draws comparisons to his work, especially given its similar themes and nostalgic 1980s setting. However, King himself has expressed reservations about these parallels, suggesting the connection isn’t as strong as many fans believe.
In a candid Q&A with The Guardian, King addressed the comparisons directly. He said he doesn’t see Stranger Things as a typical Stephen King story. Instead, he credits the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, with crafting a unique narrative that goes beyond his influence. “I think the Duffer Brothers give me more credit than I deserve,” King noted. “They grew up reading a lot of my work and wanted to create something inspired by it, but the story they developed is very much their own. It’s got a lot of Duffer Brothers in it. It’s good. I’ve seen all the episodes. I like it a lot.”
The Duffer Brothers have openly acknowledged their admiration for King’s work, particularly the 2017 adaptation of It and its chilling antagonist, Pennywise the Dancing Clown. In interviews, they’ve credited King’s influence on shaping the tone and atmosphere of Stranger Things, as well as the dynamic of a small group of kids confronting supernatural forces.
Matt Duffer explained in a Vanity Fair interview that It was a major inspiration from the start. “The idea of kids in a small town battling a supernatural entity from another dimension has always been there,” he said. “The biggest takeaway from It for me is character first. If you don’t care about the kids, nothing else matters. Pennywise is terrifying because you see yourself in those kids. King convinced me I was there, then brought the clown in.”
This mutual respect between the author and the showrunners was highlighted further when news broke in 2021 that the Duffer Brothers would adapt King and Peter Straub’s novel The Talisman for Netflix. Although the project was shelved after the Duffers moved to Paramount, fans remain hopeful that another collaboration involving a King adaptation could still happen in the future.
Ultimately, while Stephen King appreciates the nods and inspiration, he maintains that Stranger Things stands as its own creative work. The Duffer Brothers’ blend of nostalgia, horror, and heartfelt storytelling has carved out a distinct place in the genre, even as it pays homage to King’s enduring legacy.
