AceShowbiz - Colin Farrell got candid about his decision to place his eldest son, James, in a long-term care facility. James, 21, was born with Angelman syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that impacts the nervous system, leading to developmental delays and other complications, including issues with speech and balance.
In a discussion with Candis Magazine, Farrell shared the difficult decision he and James' mother, Kim Bordenave, faced. "It's tricky - some parents will say, 'I want to take care of my child myself,' and I respect that," Farrell explained.
"But my horror would be, what if I have a heart attack tomorrow, and, God forbid, James' mother, Kim, has a car crash and she's taken too - and then James is on his own? Then he's a ward of the state and he goes where? We'd have no say in it."
Farrell and Bordenave are now exploring options to find a suitable facility for James. "We want him to find somewhere where he can have a full and happy life, where he feels connected," Farrell emphasized.
The decision stems from their concern about James's well-being should anything happen to them, ensuring that he is properly cared for in a nurturing environment.
The actor's devotion to his son extends beyond just this decision. Farrell has actively advocated for families dealing with intellectual disabilities, launching a foundation to provide support and resources.
Reflecting on the milestones James has achieved, Farrell shared a profound moment from James's childhood. "I'll never forget just the face of determination on him as he walked toward me. He took, like, six steps, and I burst into tears," said Farrell, showing the pride he has in his son's accomplishments.
In addition to James, Farrell is also a father to 14-year-old Henry, whom he shares with Alicja Bachleda-Curus. His story is a testament to the lengths parents will go to ensure their children's happiness and security, even when it involves making tough and emotional decisions.
