AceShowbiz - Soulja Boy, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, was hit with a $4 million verdict after a jury in Santa Monica, California, found him liable for a range of disturbing allegations including sexual battery, assault, and gender violence.
The lawsuit was filed by a former personal assistant and romantic partner, identified anonymously as Jane Doe, who accused the rapper of a litany of misdeeds during their two-year relationship.
Doe, who began working for Soulja Boy in 2018, claimed that the relationship turned abusive swiftly, alleging numerous instances of physical and sexual violence starting just a month into her employment.
The misconduct allegedly ranged from kicking and punching to threats of violence with a gun. She testified that he locked her in a room without food for days and exhibited aggressive behavior often backed by menacing threats.
"I wanted to die," Doe tearfully testified during the trial that spanned three weeks. "I just wanted to go home." Her harrowing account was supported by numerous text messages sent by Way, including one particularly gruesome message that read, "F*k u b***h. I hope u die slow."
The jury found Way liable for intentional infliction of emotional distress, sexual harassment, and nonpayment of wages but did not find him guilty of false imprisonment or hostile work environment.
However, in a potential twist, additional punitive damages are still being considered, which could further elevate the financial repercussions for the rapper.
Way, on the other hand, expressed his disappointment with the verdict, reading from a statement post-trial, "I want to make it clear that I'm innocent. I am committed to filing an appeal and fighting for the truth to be revealed."
He criticized the anonymity granted to the plaintiff, arguing it created an unequal playing field, and maintained that their relationship was consensual, dismissing her as a disgruntled ex motivated by a financial payday.
The legal aftermath of the case paints a troubling picture of the rapper's past. He was ordered to pay $471,800 in a previous lawsuit in 2021, where another ex-girlfriend accused him of domestic violence and kidnapping. Moreover, another unresolved case involves an assault allegation by Nia Riley, his ex-girlfriend from the reality show "Love & Hip Hop."
Doe's attorneys claim this verdict is just the start of justice for Way's victims. "We're going to ask for millions of dollars more based on his ability to pay," said Neama Rahmani, the plaintiff's lawyer.
