AceShowbiz - Courtney Love is planning to permanently move to the United Kingdom. At a recent event hosted by the Royal Geographical Society in London, the 60-year-old musician dished on her reasons for leaving the United States while expressing her joy at living in her new adopted country, where she has been residing since 2019.
"I'm really glad I'm here. It's so great to live here. I'm finally getting my British citizenship in six months. I get to be a citizen. I'm applying, man! Can't get rid of me!” she enthused to the audience, as quoted by Daily Mail.
Love, who first gained fame as the frontwoman of the alt-rock band Hole, relocated to London during Donald Trump's first presidential term. Her decision is deeply rooted in her critical view of Trump and his administration. Speaking candidly, she described the current political climate in the US as "frightening now. It's like cyanide now."
She further elaborated, "In terms of Trump, and particularly this group … it's like emperor-core. Like, [they're] wearing million-dollar watches. Emperor-core is going on at Mar-a-Lago."
Her comments elicited applause from the crowd, highlighting a shared sentiment of disillusionment with the present US administration.
Love isn't the only celebrity to have made such a drastic move. In the wake of Trump's re-election, other prominent figures have also chosen to leave the States.
Former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have relocated to the UK permanently while comedian Rosie O'Donnell has moved to Ireland with her 12-year-old child, Clay.
O'Donnell, visibly affected by the political changes, stated in a TikTok video, "It's been heartbreaking to see what's happening politically and hard for me personally as well. When it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that's when we will consider coming back."
DeGeneres and de Rossi cited similar reasons for their move, feeling "very disillusioned" by the election results.
Courtney Love's affinity for the UK predates her move in 2019. In a 2017 interview with the Evening Standard, she expressed her desire to live by the Thames and her fondness for "Country Life" magazine. Love extolled the virtues of London, remarking on its laws, safety, and the quality of life.
As Love prepares to finalize her British citizenship, it remains to be seen if more celebrities will follow suit. One thing is clear: for these stars, the allure of the UK and other international destinations offers a promising escape from a politically charged and divisive America.
