AceShowbiz - Actress Ayo Edebiri shed light on the harrowing backlash she faced after Elon Musk shared a fake rumor about her casting in a new "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie.
The incident, which occurred last February, stemmed from an unfounded claim by the X account "Unlimited L's" that Disney was considering Edebiri as a replacement for Johnny Depp in the franchise. Taking the bait without fact-checking the news, Musk retweeted the post while adding his own disparaging comment, "Disney sucks."
Edebiri, best known for her roles in "The Bear" and "Bottoms," recounted the troubling aftermath on her Instagram Stories.
"Just remembering when I got some of the most insane death threats and racial slurs of my life (idk if it's the #1 moment, but for sure top 3) for a fake reboot of a movie I had never even heard of because of this man," she wrote, further branding Musk as a "fascist" and an "idiot."
The actress's post gained more traction when she shared a screenshot of a quote from comedian Bill Burr's NPR "Fresh Air" interview. Burr criticized Musk, calling him a "guy with dyed hair plugs and a laminated face" who "makes a bad car and has an obsolete social media platform," also questioning why liberals are "so afraid of this guy who can't fight his way out of a wet paper bag."
In her humorous style, Edebiri even joked about the irony of the situation with a friend's message suggesting she would be a great fit for the role in the rumored "Pirates" film. "Wait no DEI, but I've changed my mind maybe we could make some money idk lmk," she quipped, directing her comment towards Disney.
Despite her attempts to address the rumor through humor, Edebiri clearly expressed her frustration when the media picked up on her Instagram Stories. "Stop making my IG stories news" because "I'm just tryna have a silly goofy time," she admonished.
Musk's involvement in and commentary on the entertainment industry has ruffled feathers before. This incident recalls a time when "Saturday Night Live" star Chloe Fineman alleged Musk made her "burst into tears" behind the scenes of the show he hosted in 2021.
In a cultural moment fraught with misinformation and online hostility, Edebiri's experience underscores the toxic impact that even baseless rumors can have when amplified by influential figures.
As of now, representatives for both Edebiri and Musk have yet to make any further statements.
