AceShowbiz - Amazon CEO addresses the controversy over its James Bond takeover. During a TV interview focused on Amazon's latest advancements in AI technology, CNBC's anchor Jon Fortt couldn't resist steering the conversation towards the future of James Bond.
CEO Andy Jassy addressed the burning questions with cautious optimism, emphasizing that while no plans are set in stone, the franchise is in good hands.
Earlier this week, Amazon MGM Studios surprised fans with a new agreement that effectively hands over creative control of the 007 franchise from longtime stewards Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to Amazon while the two producers will remain co-owners.
Jassy, clarifying Amazon's stance on the franchise during the interview, remarked, "We don't have a plan yet on what the next theme is going to be. We haven't - nobody's written the story yet. But we will take great care. It's an amazing franchise that we care a lot about and that we expect to develop over a long period of time."
While concerns mount among fans about potential over-exploitation of the British super-spy, Jassy reassured that the tech giant has every intention of maintaining the high standards set by the franchise's storied history.
"First of all, I don't believe that AI is going to write a Bond movie any time soon," he quipped in response to hypothetical fears of automation. He further added that Amazon executives are "incredibly honored to have the ability to help shepherd the Bond franchise for the next generation."
The last Bond film, "No Time to Die," hit theaters in fall 2021, and since then, significant progress on Bond 26 has been stalled. No actor has been officially confirmed to replace Daniel Craig. With Wilson retiring from filmmaking and Broccoli pursuing other ventures, it marks the end of an era.
Fans are understandably anxious about Amazon potentially saturating the market with Bond content. Previously, Broccoli and Wilson had nixed the idea of spin-offs and TV series, maintaining a focus on theatrical releases.
Now, Amazon reportedly has carte blanche to explore an array of Bond-related projects, sparking debate among enthusiasts about whether this will dilute the franchise or propel it to new heights.
Given the enormity of the investment Amazon made to acquire MGM, and by extension, the James Bond rights, it's clear the company has big plans. The critical task for Amazon will be to honor the legacy of the franchise while innovatively expanding its universe. As Jassy confidently stated, the journey is just beginning, and Amazon plans to take it forward with "great care."
