'Saturday Night Live' 50th celebration airing over the weekend has put the spotlight on some of its most contentious past moments, drawing reactions from lawyer and fans alike.

While celebrating its longevity and influence in popular culture, the show did not shy away from highlighting some of its more controversial guest appearances.
A special segment titled "In Memoriam" poked fun at these moments, featuring disgraced public figures like Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, O.J. Simpson, Robert Blake, and R. Kelly.
R. Kelly's inclusion in the reel, showing him on stage with Lady Gaga during a 2013 episode with Gaga thanking him for his performance and Diddy's name-dropping the singer, "Don't judge a book by its cover. My man is like R. Kelly," did not sit well with the singer or his attorney.
While Simpson's attorney was unfazed by the joke, Kelly's lawyer Jennifer Bonjean slammed the sketch. She told TMZ, "[It's] rather arrogant that SNL sees it as their job to decide, belatedly, who should and should not be canceled."
The controversy stems from the legal troubles that have enveloped Kelly and other figures mentioned. R. Kelly is currently in jail after being sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2022 following damning accusations levelled against him.
The lawyer further criticized "SNL" for cherry-picking, implying that other "problematic" celebrities could have also been included in the reel. Despite the humorous intent, Kelly's lawyer and supporters believe the segment crossed a line.
As the debate over these reflections from SNL's past continues, it highlights the complex interplay between celebrity culture, media responsibility, and public perceptions of justice and redemption.
