Calvin Jones, a former NFL running back and Super Bowl champion, has passed away at the age of 54 at his home in Nebraska due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

AceShowbiz - Calvin Jones, former NFL running back, Super Bowl champion, and Nebraska Cornhuskers football legend, has reportedly died at the age of 54. Authorities found Jones' body in the basement of a house in north Omaha, Nebraska on Wednesday night, January 22.

According to police reports, carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected as the cause of death, though an official cause is pending the results of an autopsy.

Jones was discovered unconscious with a running generator nearby, a result of using it to heat his home after his furnace had ceased working. A neighbor alerted authorities after detecting gas odors coming from the residence. Jo Dusatko, a friend of Jones, revealed that Jones had been using the generator due to the malfunctioning furnace.

Born in Omaha, Calvin Jones was a decorated high school athlete, shining both in football and track. At Omaha Central High School, he earned the Gatorade Circle of Champions state running back of the year and became a state champion sprinter.

His stellar performance earned him a spot at the University of Nebraska, where he played for the Cornhuskers from 1991 to 1993. Alongside Derek Brown, Jones was part of the legendary "we-back" system, leading Nebraska to dominate college football rushing statistics.

During his time with Nebraska, Jones rushed for over 3,000 yards and scored 40 touchdowns. His outstanding sophomore season saw him earn All-American honors, and he led the Big 8 Conference in scoring as a freshman. One of his most memorable performances came in 1991 when he ran for a freshman-record 294 yards and six touchdowns against Kansas, solidifying his place in Cornhuskers history.

Jones declared for the NFL draft in 1994 and was selected in the third round by the Los Angeles Raiders. Over three seasons, he played for both the Raiders and the Green Bay Packers, appearing in 16 games and contributing to the Packers' Super Bowl victory in 1997. Despite his promising start, his professional career was relatively short, concluding with modest stats of 112 rushing yards on 27 carries.

Following his sudden death, Nebraska Football issued a heartfelt statement, "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Husker legend and Super Bowl Champion, Calvin Jones. Our hearts go out to the Jones family, and he will be greatly missed." As the football community mourns this tragic loss, Calvin Jones' legacy as a remarkable athlete and person will undoubtedly endure.
