In her new memoir, Brooke Shields sheds light on a past controversy involving Tom Cruise, explaining reasons behind her decision to defend herself against his 'deluded' agenda.

AceShowbiz - Brooke Shields revisits her public spat with Tom Cruise in her freshly-released memoir, "Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old." The dispute took place in 2005 when Cruise, 62, openly criticized Shields for taking medication to combat postpartum depression, a sensitive issue that she had candidly discussed in her previous memoir "Down Came the Rain."

Shields explains in her latest book why she felt compelled to defend herself against Cruise's allegations. She reflects, "Had Tom taken a public swing at me before I became a mother, I probably would have stayed quiet."

"I would have ignored his ridiculous rant. I might have been content to sit back while this very famous man hijacked my experience to advance his own (deluded) agenda… I would have been satisfied that his behavior would speak for itself."

In 2005, Shields, who had recently turned 40, felt that Cruise's attack was not only personal but also dangerous. Cruise, a well-known Scientologist, had stated on the "Today" show, "There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance. The thing that I'm saying about Brooke is that there's misinformation. She doesn't understand the history of psychiatry."

In response, Shields penned an op-ed for The New York Times, defending herself and the countless women facing similar struggles, against what she described as "irrational and dangerous comments from an unschooled actor who was speaking way out of his depth."

Shields also shared personal growth in her latest memoir, stating, "Sitting quietly and letting myself be attacked might have been my approach a decade earlier… but now I was emboldened by life experience." This confidence stems not only from her age but also from her roles as a mother to daughters Rowan and Grier and wife to Chris Henchy.

Interestingly, despite the drama, Shields attended Cruise's wedding to Katie Holmes in November 2006. Shields confirms in her memoir that Cruise eventually apologized for his remarks although not publicly. She recounted, "It wasn't the world's best apology, but it's what he was capable of, and I accepted it."

Through her memoir and reflections, Brooke Shields hopes to emphasize the importance of self-advocacy and the shared reality of postpartum depression, urging a move towards greater understanding and support for women's mental health issues.
