AceShowbiz - As the long-running YSL RICO trial draws closer to a verdict, one of the co-defendants Deamonte Kendrick, better known as rapper Yak Gotti, experienced another blow. Kendrick was stabbed during a physical altercation at the South Annex of Fulton County Jail on Sunday, December 1.
The Fulton County Sheriff's Office confirmed the incident, which has spurred an investigation to identify the aggressor and potential charges. Despite suffering minor injuries from a "sharp object," he managed to appear in court the following Monday.
"Kendrick received treatment for minor injuries from a sharp object at the Fulton County Jail. The incident occurred at the South Annex in Union City where both men were being housed. Kendrick will be in court today. This is an active investigation to determine the aggressor in this incident and if charges will be pending," stated the Sheriff's Office.
This incident is not the first violent encounter for Kendrick, as his mother alleged he was targeted in another stabbing attack in October of 2022 due to snitching rumors. The current circumstances of the case indicate that the rapper's troubles are far from over. While he awaits his verdict, the jury continues its deliberations, previously pausing for a holiday break.
The YSL RICO case has been fraught with controversy and drama, sustaining its place as the longest trial in Georgia's history. Of the 28 men originally indicted for alleged RICO violations and other crimes, only Kendrick and Shannon Stillwell remain on trial.
Prosecutors have used police testimony, social media posts, and song lyrics to substantiate claims of gang-related activities by YSL, which they allege was co-founded by prominent Atlanta rapper Young Thug. The defense, however, has vehemently argued that YSL is a legitimate music label and not a criminal organization.
The highest-profile defendant, Young Thug, exited jail last month after entering a non-negotiated guilty plea, aiming for a more agreeable sentence than what was being proposed in plea deals. In contrast, Kendrick and Stillwell have rejected deals and maintained their innocence.
Doug Weinstein, Kendrick's lawyer, expressed optimism about his client's condition, stating, "I spoke to Deamonte last night, and while he sounded tired, I expect him to make a full recovery. I expect to be able to see him in court today and will know more then. Please keep Deamonte in your prayers, along with all those housed in our Fulton County jails."
As deliberations continue, the stakes remain high for Kendrick and Stillwell. Their future now hinges on the jury's decision and the judge's ruling on potential sentences. Regardless of the outcome, it's clear that the turmoil surrounding the YSL RICO trial will not soon be forgotten.
