AceShowbiz - Lil Nas X has been teasing a musical comeback for some time, and he has finally dropped the first hint of what's to come. The rapper has released a video teaser for his new era "DREAMBOY", which showcases a comical setup and a split personality motif.
In the teaser, Lil Nas X finds himself floating on wreckage in the middle of the ocean. He is then visited by a futuristic version of himself, who wears a white and pink gear with a helmet reminiscent of a Power Ranger. The futuristic version tells him, "I'm a higher version of you. And I'm gonna help you save yourself. It's time to remember who are you. Who you really are."
The futuristic Lil Nas X then shows regular Nas X a series of videos seemingly tied to his past. A portal then opens up in the middle of the ocean, and the regular version of the rapper jumps through it. Before he does, he takes note of the song playing in the background, which is implied to be the titular "DREAMBOY."
Lil Nas X provided more context via Instagram, writing that "DREAMBOY" "vanished" when the world needed him most. This new era marks a significant shift for Lil Nas X, who has faced criticism for focusing more on controversy than music. By embracing a more conceptual approach, he aims to refocus the narrative on his talent.
This will also mark the first wave of new music from Lil Nas X in years. He teased the release of his mixtape "Nasarati 2" throughout 2024, but the full tape has yet to be released. Instead, various cuts from "Nasarati 2" have been uploaded exclusively to SoundCloud. In terms of studio releases, he has not released new material since "Montero" in 2021.
Lil Nas X has promised that "phase 1" of his new era begins on Monday, November 11 and has announced that his song "Light Again" will hit streaming platforms on Friday, November 15. Fans are speculating that this next era will be a major moment for the rapper, who has consistently pushed the boundaries of music and visual art.
