AceShowbiz - Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean, 46, has revealed that he contacted former One Direction singer Liam Payne, 31, the day before his untimely death out of concern for his well-being.
McLean and Payne had grown close while filming the Netflix series "Building the Band", where Payne served as a guest judge and McLean hosted. They bonded over their shared experiences as teen heartthrobs who later battled substance abuse.
According to McLean, he and Payne communicated almost daily on WhatsApp even after the show wrapped. However, in the weeks leading up to Payne's death, McLean noticed that he had become unresponsive.
On October 15, one day before Payne's fall from a third-floor hotel balcony in Argentina, McLean texted him, "Hey man, are you good?" Payne never replied.
McLean expressed his deep sorrow over Payne's loss, describing him as "a massive heart and a massive talent." He acknowledged that Payne had relapsed sometime after filming "Building the Band" and expressed his regret that he was unable to help him.
McLean, who has been sober for three years, emphasized the seriousness of addiction and the importance of seeking help. The death of Payne has put the Netflix series on hold, with plans to consult with Payne's family before releasing it.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, McLean described Payne as an "old soul" who had experienced hardships. McLean, who saw himself as an "older brother" to Payne, said he had tried to support him through his struggles.
Despite his unanswered text message, McLean expressed understanding and hoped that Payne would be remembered for his kindness and talent. Payne's death serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing battle against addiction and the importance of reaching out to those in need.
