The creator of the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' books on which the show is based, writes in a recent blog post that a spin-off focusing on the city of Braavos was once in development.

AceShowbiz - In 2011, HBO's "Game of Thrones" captivated audiences worldwide, becoming one of the most beloved shows of all time. Despite the controversial conclusion in 2019, HBO has continued to develop spin-offs, including the recently premiered House of the Dragon. Another series, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms", is also in the works.

However, other spin-offs have met a different fate. George R.R. Martin, the creator of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" books on which the show is based, revealed in a recent blog post that a spin-off focusing on the city of Braavos was once in development. Despite the project being shelved a few years ago, Martin has hinted at his desire to return to the concept.

"One of these days I need to write that story about Braavos we were developing for HBO. They shelved that one a couple of years back, alas, but that does not mean I won't go back to it... after WINDS OF WINTER is done, of course," Martin wrote.

Braavos, inspired by cities like Venice and Amsterdam, plays a significant role in the Game of Thrones universe. As one of the Free Cities, it is home to the powerful Iron Bank of Braavos, which finances the Iron Throne of Westeros. Additionally, Braavos became a sanctuary for Arya Stark as she trained with the Faceless Men.

While the Braavos spin-off may have been shelved, HBO continues to explore other "Game of Thrones" projects. Series set around Flea Bottom, the Seven Gods, and the Doom of Valyria have been scrapped, but others, including 10,000 Ships, Aegon's Conquest, and The Sea Snake/ Nine Voyages, are currently in development.

As fans await updates on the future of "Game of Thrones" spin-offs, Martin's revelation about the abandoned Braavos concept adds another layer of intrigue to the ever-expanding world of Westeros.
