She praised Purina and its partner RedRover for their Purple Leash Project, which helps domestic violence shelters become pet-friendly.

Hyland, herself a survivor of domestic violence, shared that she believes it is crucial to talk openly about abuse to break the stigma and empower survivors. She emphasized that the first step taken by abusers is to isolate victims, making it essential for them to have a support system.

Nearly half of domestic abuse survivors delay leaving because they cannot take their pets with them, and fewer than 20% of domestic violence shelters accept animals. The Purple Leash Project aims to address this issue, providing shelters with resources to make them pet-friendly and allowing survivors to escape with their furry companions.

Purina and RedRover have collaborated to provide over $1.6 million in funding to 52 domestic violence shelters across the United States since 2019. This financial assistance has helped shelters renovate facilities, provide pet beds, heaters, kennels, and cover vet costs.

Hyland expressed her gratitude for the recognition from Purina, stating that she is passionate about animal welfare. She believes that Purina's support through programs like the Purple Leash Project ensures that survivors do not have to choose between their safety and the well-being of their pets.

The Variety Courage Award also acknowledged Hyland's willingness to use her platform to advocate for survivors. Her openness and determination have inspired others to speak out about their experiences and seek support.
