p>In the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, Vice President Kamala Harris has publicly criticized former President Donald Trump for disseminating misinformation about the federal disaster response efforts.
During her recent media appearances on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" and ABC's "The View," Harris did not hesitate to express her frustration and disappointment in Trump's approach, emphasizing the importance of empathy and truth during crises.
"It's crude. Have you no empathy, man, for the suffering of other people? Have you no sense of purpose if you purport to be a leader?" Harris remarked on "The Late Show" while condemning Trump's false claims regarding disaster relief funds and the overall response.
She continued, "To tell these lies in a way that is meant to make people distrust the help that is there for them to receive. It just is something we have to say, 'Look, at some point we have to work together.' "
Harris underscored the devastating impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which together have claimed over 230 lives and left millions without power. She praised the bipartisan efforts of North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, urging people to trust the ongoing relief efforts despite the spread of falsehoods.
Continuing her criticism on "The View," Harris accused Trump of "the height of irresponsibility and frankly callousness," stressing that "lives are literally at stake right now." She argued that Trump's actions are consistent with his tendency to put personal gain above the well-being of others. Harris described her experiences visiting the affected areas, highlighting the overwhelming pain and loss faced by the residents.
The Biden administration has also been vocal about the dangers of misinformation. President Joe Biden denounced the spread of false information as "un-American" and emphasized the need for accurate information to ensure that those affected by the hurricanes receive adequate support.
"Those who do it, do it to try to damage the administration. We can take care of ourselves. But it misleads people and puts people in circumstances where they panic," Biden noted.
In a social media post, Trump previously said of North Carolina, "I'll be there shortly, but don't like the reports that I'm getting about the Federal Government, and the Democrat Governor of the State, going out of their way to not help people in Republican areas."
He also criticized the government's response to the disaster, saying both Biden and Harris "are universally being given POOR GRADES for the way that they are handling the Hurricane, especially in North Carolina."
Amid the criticism, both Harris and Biden have called for unity in disaster relief efforts. Harris's pointed remarks on political gamesmanship highlight the critical need for leaders to prioritize people over politics during times of crisis.
Ultimately, Harris's and Biden's messages underscore the importance of empathy, truth, and cooperation as communities navigate the aftermath of catastrophic natural events. Their appeals aim to foster trust and ensure that everyone affected can access the help they need to rebuild and recover.
