AceShowbiz - Ethel Kennedy, widow of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, is currently recovering in the hospital after suffering a stroke last Thursday morning, October 3. The news was shared by her grandson Joe Kennedy III and her daughter Kerry Kennedy on social media platforms.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Joe Kennedy III detailed that his grandmother experienced a stroke in her sleep and was promptly brought to an area hospital. "She is comfortable, she is getting the best care possible, and she is surrounded by family," Joe shared. "She is, as you may know, a strong woman who has led a remarkably fulfilling life. We are here looking after her. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers."
Kerry Kennedy echoed these sentiments on her social media, emphasizing the joy Ethel had experienced through the summer and transition into fall. "Every day she enjoyed time with her children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was able to get out on the water, visit the pier, and enjoy many lunches and dinners with family. It has been a gift to all of us and to her as well," she wrote.
Both family members have requested privacy during this time, asking supporters to respect their need for space while Ethel recovers.
Ethel Kennedy turned 96 in April and celebrated the milestone with her extensive family. Photos shared by Joe Kennedy III captured happy moments as Ethel posed with her son Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Cheryl Hines. On her birthday, her daughter Kerry honored her with a video montage set to Taylor Swift's song "Starlight", a tune inspired by Ethel's early romance with Robert F. Kennedy. "Today is my mom's 96th birthday! To celebrate her, please listen to this great song that @taylorswift13 wrote about my parents!" Kerry wrote.
A revered figure in American political history, Ethel married Robert F. Kennedy in 1950, and together they had 11 children. Following Robert's assassination in 1968, Ethel remained an influential force, founding the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization later that year. In 2014, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama, recognizing her lifelong dedication to activism and public service.
