AceShowbiz - Actress Sophie Turner has recently taken to social media to clarify comments she made regarding the struggles of single motherhood. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Turner, who stars as the notorious jewel thief Joan Hannington in the upcoming series "Joan," was quoted discussing the challenges faced by single mothers. However, Turner has emphasized that these remarks were about her character, not her own life.
Turner addressed the misquote on her Instagram Stories on September 30, stating, "I have been widely misquoted today in publications where I have 'stated' that 'it's such a struggle being a single mother.' I'd like to clarify that I was talking about the character of Joan that I play and was not referring to myself, which is obvious from the original interview in The Sunday Times culture section."
The 28-year-old mother of two, who shares daughters Willa, 4, and Delphine, 2, with ex-husband Joe Jonas, expressed her gratitude for the support she has in raising her children. "I am very fortunate personally to have a lot of help around me, which is not the case for a lot of people," Turner noted. "I applaud all single mothers doing it alone."
In her interview with The Sunday Times, Turner shed light on the emotional connection she felt to her character, Joan. "If I hadn't been a mother, I don't know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it," she explained, emphasizing the perseverance and fight Joan exhibited for her daughter, despite her flawed methods.
"It's such a struggle being a single mother. Joan doesn't go about it in the best way... but it is amazing to see her really fighting for her daughter. It's also really important for kids to see just how hard parents work for them."
Turner also reflected on how playing the role of Joan amidst her own personal upheaval gave her strength. "From utter desperation comes so much will and ambition. The series came around at a time in my life where I had to be ambitious and I had to have such strong will and fight against the forces. She gave me a lot of strength."
The actress's remarks come in the wake of her high-profile divorce from Jonas, finalized earlier this year after a rocky start involving a custody dispute. Despite the challenges, Turner remains focused on providing a supportive environment for her daughters and aims to create harmonious family gatherings in the future. As she explained to British Vogue, "I don't care about the politics, I just want the girls to feel loved and have everyone show up for them."
