AceShowbiz - Hulu has officially canceled the drama series "Black Cake" after just one season. The decision comes nearly a year after the show's debut in November 2023.
Based on Wilkerson's novel of the same name, "Black Cake" is a generational saga that follows a runaway bride named Covey (Mia Isaac) who disappears in the 1960s. Fifty years later, her estranged children discover a flash drive containing her untold stories.
The show was developed by Marissa Jo Cerar, who also served as showrunner and executive producer alongside Oprah Winfrey, Aaron Kaplan, Carla Gardini, Brian Morewitz and Michael Lohmann. It starred Chipo Chung, Ashley Thomas, Adrienne Warren, Lashay Anderson, Faith Alabi and Glynn Turman.
Despite critical acclaim and an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Writing, Hulu opted not to renew the series for a second season. The news comes amid reports that Netflix had expressed interest in picking up the show, but the inquiry did not progress due to the rarity of program relocations between major streamers.
Initially, Cerar had pitched three seasons for "Black Cake", indicating that there was ample material to explore beyond the first season. However, the show's structure differed from the novel, and the team was eager to delve deeper into Mabel's story in a potential second season.
