AceShowbiz - Michael Che and Colin Jost, co-anchors of "Saturday Night Live" segment "Weekend Update," are known for their witty exchanges and on-screen chemistry. Over the years, they've delighted audiences with their clever jokes, but one joke, in particular, rubbed Che the wrong way, sparking an intense reaction that almost led to his departure from the show.
On a recent episode of the "Fly on the Wall" podcast with Dana Carvey and David Spade, Che revealed that a pun from Jost made him so furious, he threatened to quit. Recalling the moment, Che said, "Yeah, I think jalapeño business, I was pretty furious about that one." Jost responded humorously, "You were just upset that it worked so well."
The joke in question aired during the season 40 finale of "SNL" in May 2015. Jost delivered the setup, "Ohio police arrested a woman who allegedly stabbed her boyfriend for eating all of their salsa." His punchline, "Though you'd be angry too if your boyfriend was jalapeño business," took everyone by surprise, especially Che.
Che vividly remembered his initial reaction during the run-through, "I remember in run-through when you did it, because I never heard it before. I don't remember what the setup was, but the punchline was 'jalapeño business.' And I was like, 'If you tell that joke on air, I'm leaving. I'm quitting the show.' And he did it on air and it destroyed. And I was so frustrated. I was so frustrated. I was like, 'I don't even know what we do anymore.' "
Jost had indeed considered cutting the joke after seeing Che's reaction, but ultimately decided to keep it. "I would have honestly cut it if it wasn't so upsetting to you. And then I was like, 'I'm definitely, definitely doing this.' "
This behind-the-scenes story showcases the dynamic between the two comedians and the lengths they go to challenge and entertain each other. Despite the tension, their synergy has contributed to their long-running success as co-anchors. Their partnership will continue to captivate audiences as they prepare to return for "SNL" milestone 50th season, which premieres on September 28 on NBC and Peacock.
Even with the occasional jab that hits too close, Che and Jost's rapport proves that comedy is not just about making others laugh, but also about evolving through moments of discomfort and frustration.
