AceShowbiz - Will Ferrell has reflected on his "Saturday Night Live" impersonations and expressed some regrets, particularly regarding his portrayal of Janet Reno in drag. During an interview with The New York Times podcast alongside Steele, Ferrell admitted that the sketch "hits a false note now."
Steele, who has since come out as transgender, expanded on Ferrell's sentiment, explaining that the humor derived from Ferrell dressing up as a woman is problematic and perpetuates harmful stereotypes. "I understand the laugh is a drag laugh. It's, 'Hey, look at this guy in a dress, and that's funny.' It's absolutely not funny," Steele said.
Ferrell acknowledged that he and the writers may have made missteps in the past. "I mean, in a way, the cast - you're kind of given this assignment. So I'm going to blame the writers," he said jokingly. However, Steele took responsibility, stating, "Yeah, he's not culpable at all."
Steele went on to acknowledge his own regrets regarding some of the sketches he wrote for "SNL". "I wrote stuff I wasn't proud of. I'm just moving on. I have to," he said.
