AceShowbiz - In an interview with "The Howard Stern Show", longtime "Saturday Night Live" (SNL) writers and "Weekend Update" co-hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost discussed their thoughts on potentially replacing Lorne Michaels as the head of the show.
When asked if he would consider taking over for Michaels, Che expressed skepticism. "I don't know how you do that job and not be Lorne," he said. "It's in his image, and it's gonna be so strange." Jost agreed, noting that Michaels' vast network of alumni and responsibilities outside of the show's production would make the role daunting.
Che also compared it to being a stepfather to a 50-year-old, emphasizing the impossibility of replacing Michaels. Jost expressed apprehension about the potential changes "SNL" might undergo if Michaels were to leave. "We obviously care about it. You want it to keep going in some way," he said. "And when it's done well, it's a really unique thing. So it would be sad if it changed or got weird."
Stern also inquired about Che and Jost's long-term plans with "SNL". Che admitted to toying with the idea of leaving in the past due to his desire to return to stand-up comedy. However, he and Jost both reiterated their commitment to the show and emphasized that they see themselves as a team. Should one of them leave, the other would likely follow suit.
Despite their thoughts on replacing Michaels, Che and Jost acknowledged that they cannot envision a life outside of "SNL". "My brain is on the clock of 'Saturday Night Live'," Che said.
While there have been rumors about Michaels' retirement after the show's 50th season, he has not made any definitive announcements. Seth Meyers, a former "SNL" cast member, believes that Michaels will remain in his role for the foreseeable future.
