AceShowbiz - Fans across North America, brace yourselves for a longer wait to bid farewell to Childish Gambino. Donald Glover, the creative powerhouse behind the moniker, has announced a postponement of his final North American tour "to focus on my physical health." This news comes in the wake of the artist already cancelling a recent Houston show due to illness.
The announcement was made public through Glover's social media on Monday, September 9. "Hey everyone," he tweeted. "Unfortunately I have to postpone the rest of the North American tour to focus on my physical health for a few weeks."
Glover, who has been in fine voice and physical form during the tour's earlier dates in Brooklyn, performs a physically demanding show that places a considerable focus on him for nearly 90 minutes. Elements of the show include intricate technology, lighting, lasers, and even a giant crystal cloud that lights up in synchronized sequences, making any health impairment a significant impact on the spectacle.
According to Variety, a show in Connecticut had to be canceled as the venue couldn't accommodate the complex technology involved.
The North American leg was set to conclude on October 3 in Chicago, following a journey that would have taken the artist across major cities, from Austin, Texas, to the West Coast and Midwest. Although the rest of the North American tour dates are paused, Glover's European, Australian, and New Zealand performances are still on for later this year and early next year, offering some hope to international fans.
The tour supports Glover's latest and final album as Childish Gambino, "Bando Stone and the New World," which debuted at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 in August. The album also doubles as the soundtrack for Glover's upcoming film of the same name, cementing the work as a significant part of his creative legacy.
"Success to me is, honestly, being able to put out a wide-scale album that I would listen to," Glover told the New York Times, further elaborating that his decision to retire Childish Gambino is partly due to the "continued decline of album consumption" and "disruptions in the touring business."
Yet, as Glover prepares to step away from the Childish Gambino identity, his multi-faceted career shows no signs of slowing. The five-time Grammy winner and Emmy-nominated actor continues to thrive in the entertainment industry, recently picking up Emmy nods for his work in "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."
Fans are urged to hold onto their tickets for the North American tour, as Glover has promised all tickets will be honored once the postponed dates are rescheduled. Though the delay is disappointing, one can only hope that Glover's focus on his health will lead to a more spectacular and resilient return.
