AceShowbiz - Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan Olympic marathon runner, has sadly passed away from injuries sustained in a horrific attack.
According to police reports, Cheptegei was doused in petrol and set on fire by her ex-boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, at her home in western Kenya on Sunday, September 1. Cheptegei had recently returned home after competing at the Paris Olympics.
The attack occurred after an argument between the couple over property. Neighbors witnessed Ndiema pouring liquid on Cheptegei and setting her ablaze. She sustained burns to over 75% of her body.
Cheptegei was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, where she received intensive care. However, despite efforts to save her life, she passed away on Wednesday, September 4 due to organ failure.
The Ugandan Athletics Federation released a statement condemning the attack, "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice."
